Michigan Poll Finds Nearly Half Wouldn’t Consider A Muslim President

A new poll is testing Michigan voters’ appetite for a potential Muslim presidential candidate as Democrat Abdul El-Sayed mounts his bid to become the first Muslim elected to the U.S. Senate.

About 45% of Michigan likely voters said they would not consider voting for a Muslim candidate for president, according to a new Washington Post and George Mason University’s Schar School poll. The Post found that El-Sayed’s support among those voters was five percentage points lower than that of Democratic gubernatorial nominee Jocelyn Benson, who will also be on November’s ballot.

“To have respondents from this poll, 45% say they would not consider voting for a Muslim. First of all, it’s just gross,” an outraged Dana Bash said live on CNN. “It’s gross, but that is what he’s contending with.”

The poll, conducted September 10-14 among 803 likely voters, found El-Sayed leading Republican Mike Rogers 48% to 45%, a three-point margin that falls within the survey’s 3.9-point margin of error.

The survey also found that 46% of Michigan likely voters would not consider voting for an atheist presidential candidate, compared with 20% for a Jewish candidate and 7% for a Christian candidate.

Michigan voters want Democratic control of the Senate, but the survey found softer support for El-Sayed among core constituencies, including black voters. Eighty-three percent said they want Democrats to control the Senate, while only 67% back El-Sayed, according to the survey.

El-Sayed’s close connections with controversial political figures, including leftist streamer Hasan Piker, have taken center stage in the contentious Senate contest. One conservative group marked the 25th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks with a blistering new television ad pointing out the ties between El-Sayed and Piker, who previously said America “deserved” the deadliest terrorist attack in U.S. history, The Daily Wire reported.

The one-minute spot from Great Lakes Conservative Fund opened with harrowing scenes of Ground Zero and aired in the Detroit market on the 25th anniversary of 9/11.

“Twenty-five years ago, America was attacked — not for something we did, but for who we are. The attackers tried to divide us with hatred. It had the opposite effect. We united with courage and with resolve,” the ad’s narrator states.

“But the hatred behind 9/11 did not disappear,” the ad continues, featuring infamous clips from Piker’s livestreams before turning its focus to El-Sayed.

“Abdul El-Sayed gives comfort to that hatred. He campaigns with it. He accepts money from it, and he justifies it. Twenty-five years later, we are being tested once again. This election, remember what is at stake,” the narrator says.

If elected, El-Sayed would become America’s first Muslim senator. His parents are both Egyptian immigrants, and his father was a part-time imam, The Daily Wire previously reported. His father-in-law is a founding committee member of the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA), which has close ties to the Muslim Brotherhood, according to the federal government.

The Cook Political Report rates the race as a toss-up.
