The best postseason series so far in 2026 finally gets its prime-time spotlight — not because MLB realized the error of its ways, but because it’s the only series still going. Yay?

The winner-take-all Game 3 of the Phillies-Braves NL Wild Card Series has been moved to 8:15 p.m. ET on Thursday after the White Sox, Yankees and Padres all clinched their Wild Card Series on Wednesday to free up precious prime-time real estate for Philadelphia and Atlanta to battle it out in front of a much larger TV audience.

Of course, because of MLB’s misguided scheduling practices, the time change is much more a consolation prize than a reward, even though this marquee matchup that has produced a banger of a series has warranted a much bigger stage than its previous 2:15 p.m. ET start times allowed.

Those early-afternoon starts have drawn consternation from many fans, who have been unable to watch large portions of the games because of work, school or other commitments. It’s not been the best look for MLB.

But fan angst aside, there’s a new wrinkle to consider.

The new start time, which wasn’t made official until after 1 a.m. ET on Thursday, means an abrupt change in routine for Phillies and Braves players, who have just gotten used to adapting their pre-game routines for early-afternoon starts and might’ve gone to bed Wednesday night not knowing whether they’d need to report to work at 9 a.m. or 3 p.m. That’s less than ideal in any job, but much more so in one that brings the physical and mental requirements of a postseason elimination game.

Though players knew the change was a possibility, the potential effects could be a not-insignificant X-factor in Game 3 if these notorious creatures of habit are thrown off by the last-minute switch. In any case, it’s a new layer of drama to monitor in a series that has no shortage of storylines.

Regardless of how we got here, millions more baseball fans will get to watch Philadelphia and Atlanta go at it one last time with a trip to the NLDS on the line, which is unquestionably a good thing — because Game 3 could be epic, if the first two games are any indication.

Games 1 and 2 were both back-and-forth affairs, with heroics coming from expected and unexpected sources. The Braves took the opener on Austin Riley‘s three-run go-ahead homer in the eighth inning. The Phillies then stole Game 2 with three homers of their own, the biggest blow being Alec Bohm‘s game-winning solo blast in the top of the 10th inning.

There’s no telling what Game 3 will bring. Phillies and Braves fans may have some ideas, based on their postseason history, but they shouldn’t assume anything. October cares not for narratives.

For everyone else, especially lovers of compelling baseball, just watch and enjoy as two good teams produce the finale for a show that, for one night, at least, will get the attention it deserves.

I am just an average American. My teen years were in the late 70s and I participated in all that that decade offered. Started working young, too young. Then I joined the Army before I graduated High School. I spent 25 years in, mostly in Infantry units. Since then I've worked in information technology positions all at small family owned companies. At this rate I'll never be a tech millionaire. When I was young I rode horses as much as I could. I do believe I should have been a cowboy. I'm getting in the saddle again by taking riding lessons and see where it goes.
