Tlaib claimed in a video published by Townhall that no one would care if El-Sayed had French dual citizenship, but because he once claimed to be Egyptian, “everybody gives a sh*t.” The Michigan Democrat, a member of the far-Left Squad, also brushed off concerns about El-Sayed’s ties to the Muslim Brotherhood, a radical group with chapters labeled as specially designated global terror organizations by the United States.
“The fact that people think he’s a terrorist because the Muslim Brotherhood — they’re saying the fact that people actually think, ‘Is he a terrorist?’ He would be in jail,” Tlaib said while speaking to a person asking how to respond to voters concerned about El-Sayed’s ties to the Muslim Brotherhood. “It’s like when I went to doors and people actually said, ‘Is Obama Muslim?’ I said, ‘So what if he is?’”
El-Sayed reportedly once signed a 2012 letter urging Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood president to “purge the media and police,” and his half-sister once claimed the family, including El-Sayed’s mother, had “long” been active in the group.

“Obviously they’re targeting [El-Sayed], trying to – they’re not talking about his politics. He doesn’t, you know – obviously he’s not a terrorist,” Tlaib said, claiming that Republicans were attempting to paint El-Sayed as a terrorist.
“His sister, by the way, his sister is a professor at a university, and like, if that was true, like, I don’t think she’d be working in a school,” she added.
The video also showed Tlaib being asked about El-Sayed’s former claims to having dual citizenship in the United States and Egypt. The person speaking with Tlaib noted that El-Sayed “wrote it in his CV,” referring to his curriculum vitae, which lists his academic accomplishments.
“I don’t know what the f*ck a CV is,” Tlaib responded.
El-Sayed’s parents immigrated to the United States from Egypt, and he was born in Rochester Hills, Michigan. Shortly after becoming a professor at Columbia University in 2014, El-Sayed claimed on his resume that he had American and Egyptian citizenship. His campaign says the claim was made by mistake and that El-Sayed is not a dual citizen.
“I don’t know why that matters,” Tlaib said of the issue. “If they’re from freaking Europe and stuff and they got like, French passport, nobody gives a sh*t. But because he’s got an Egyptian one, everybody gives a sh*t.”
El-Sayed is facing off against Republican nominee Mike Rogers in the Michigan race to succeed outgoing Democrat Senator Gary Peters. Rogers has repeatedly pressed El-Sayed over his ties to Islamic radicalism throughout the campaign.
