New Jersey Military Base Safe After Lockdown

A New Jersey military base was on lockdown Tuesday amid concerns of an active shooter. Authorities later said reports of a shooter were unfounded, according to NBC 4 New York. 

The base, Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, is located in Burlington County, New Jersey. It is fewer than 20 miles from Trenton, the state capital.

A Facebook post from the Air Force said in all capital letters: “ALL PERSONNEL ARE TO LOCK DOWN UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE. ALL PERSONNEL OUTDOORS SHOULD TAKE COVER,” The Hill and other outlets reported.

At around noon, the base posted an “ALL CLEAR. ALL CLEAR. ALL CLEAR,” on social media.

The NBC station reported that a unit at the base said there had been an “incident” and law enforcement and emergency personnel were on scene.

“Our priority is the safety and security of everyone on the installation,” Col. Michael Stefanovic, the base commander, said in a public statement. “We worked closely with local law enforcement and emergency responders to ensure the situation was investigated and resolved as quickly as possible.”

The alarm came after multiple recent incidents of violence aimed at political and religious targets, such as church shootings and the assassination of conservative leader Charlie Kirk.

The base has more than 42,000 active duty service members, civilians, and family members, NBC 4 reported. In 2009, the joint base was reportedly the first with three services after the merger of McGuire Air Force Base, Fort Dix Army base, and Naval Air Engineering Station Lakehurst.
