The suspected shooter died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. City officials said Saturday that every death happened before police reached the scene and that the public faces no ongoing threat.

Police were dispatched to a home near East Seventh and Perry streets on Erie’s east side shortly before 5 p.m. Friday after receiving a ShotSpotter alert reporting gunfire. Witnesses told investigators they had seen a man firing a weapon outside the property before going inside.

Responding officers found two women dead in the street outside the residence. Additional victims were discovered inside the home, including children, along with the suspected gunman. Authorities have not released the victims’ identities or publicly established their relationship to the suspected shooter.

The incident prompted a major law enforcement response, including the deployment of a SWAT team. Officers attempted to get the man inside to surrender before entering the home after receiving a warrant, according to ABC News.

Police later clarified that reports of additional gunfire during the response were mistaken. The sounds heard during the tactical operation came from flash-bang devices, officials said, and investigators determined that the deaths occurred before officers arrived. The city stressed that the deaths were not the result of a prolonged standoff or a delay in police action.

Erie Police Chief Rick Lorah described the scene as among the most distressing he had encountered in nearly three decades in law enforcement.

“I want to be candid with our community. This is one of the most difficult and heartbreaking scenes our officers and investigators have ever encountered,” Lorah said. “The loss of life is devastating, and the circumstances we are working through are deeply disturbing.”

Lorah confirmed that the suspected shooter was dead and said there was no ongoing threat to the public. He declined to discuss specific details of what officers found inside the residence, citing respect for the victims and their loved ones as well as the continuing investigation.

“We will not speculate about a motive or any information that could compromise this investigation,” Lorah said, according to CBS News.

The City of Erie and Mayor Daria Devlin issued a joint statement describing the shooting near East Seventh and Perry streets as a “terrible tragedy.” Officials said the situation had been contained and urged residents to be careful about sharing unverified information as investigators worked to establish what happened.

“Our thoughts are with the victims, their loved ones, and everyone impacted by tonight’s tragedy,” the statement said.

Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro said Saturday that he had spoken with Devlin and offered the state’s full support to the city. “My heart breaks for this family,” Shapiro wrote in a statement on X. “Lori and I are praying for their loved ones and the entire Erie community.”

Authorities have not announced a motive, released the names of the victims or provided a detailed account of what led to the shooting. Investigators continue to work to establish the circumstances surrounding the killings.

I am just an average American. My teen years were in the late 70s and I participated in all that that decade offered. Started working young, too young. Then I joined the Army before I graduated High School. I spent 25 years in, mostly in Infantry units. Since then I've worked in information technology positions all at small family owned companies. At this rate I'll never be a tech millionaire. When I was young I rode horses as much as I could. I do believe I should have been a cowboy. I'm getting in the saddle again by taking riding lessons and see where it goes.
