Three residents of Bedouin communities in the Negev were arrested overnight Monday into Tuesday on suspicion of planning to buy votes for Ra’am (The United Arab List party), with police saying they intended to pay citizens for their votes. The suspects live in the Segev Shalom and Ar’ara BaNegev areas.

Police said home searches uncovered envelopes containing tens of thousands of shekels in cash, along with notes and other evidence. Officers also seized ballot slips and other evidence police believe may be connected to the suspected offenses. One account adds detail: police seized envelopes containing Ra’am ballots, with cash found in some of them.

The suspects were set to appear in court on Tuesday, where police would seek to extend their detention.

Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel’s longest-serving prime minister, faces a serious challenge from former Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Gadi Eisenkot, whose newly formed Yashar Party has surged in recent polls. The election will test whether Netanyahu can overcome criticism for October 7 intelligence failures, divisions over the war, and growing calls to end military service exemptions for ultra-Orthodox young men.

Netanyahu, who cast his ballot in Jerusalem alongside his wife, Sara, emphasized the importance of the elections for Israel’s future.

“This is a fateful moment; we know what is at stake,” he said. “Vote for the future of the State of Israel.”

Despite the arrests and difficult weather conditions across the country, voters turned out in historic numbers. Central Elections Committee Interim Director Dean Livne announced that by 2:00 p.m., turnout had reached 44.9%. The figure marks the highest voter participation rate during the initial seven hours of polling since 1969.

Turnout within the Israel Defense Forces reached 48% by 1:00 p.m. Regional breakdowns showed major cities recording turnout between 27% and 29%, while several Bedouin towns in the Negev registered exceptionally high numbers.

Central Elections Committee Chairman Justice Noam Sohlberg praised the public’s resolve to participate despite lengthy wait times, confirming that all citizens queued before the 10:00 p.m. cutoff will be permitted to vote.

Shin Bet Director David Zini assured voters that the elections remain safe and trustworthy.

“The elections in Israel are safe, orderly, and supervised in an inspiring manner. There are challenges, and there are those who are trying to disrupt them, but under the leadership of Justice Sohlberg and the Israel Police, we are succeeding,” he said.

A total of 7,331,981 eligible voters can choose among 36 party lists vying for the 120 parliamentary seats across 12,018 polling stations. To assist travel, authorities made train travel and intercity buses exceeding 15 kilometers free for the day.

The final parliamentary distributions will hinge on late-tally ballots cast by security personnel and citizens unable to access standard stations.

I am just an average American. My teen years were in the late 70s and I participated in all that that decade offered. Started working young, too young. Then I joined the Army before I graduated High School. I spent 25 years in, mostly in Infantry units. Since then I've worked in information technology positions all at small family owned companies. At this rate I'll never be a tech millionaire. When I was young I rode horses as much as I could. I do believe I should have been a cowboy. I'm getting in the saddle again by taking riding lessons and see where it goes.
