Freedom Caucus Chairman Rep. Andy Harris, R-Md., told the Daily Signal that he believes that if the lower chamber were to pass his legislation, it would deliver “immediate relief” to American taxpayers.
As it stands, Americans are forced to pay an extra 18.4 cents per gallon for gasoline and 24.4 cents per gallon for diesel.
“Families and truckers need some immediate relief from the high cost of fuel to drive to work or haul goods across this country,” said Harris. “It’s time right now to temporarily suspend the federal gas and diesel tax until the end of the year. Hardworking American taxpayers deserve that break.”
While it is not confirmed whether House Republican leadership will vote on the bill before the end of the week, Harris’ office told the Daily Signal that it is optimistic that the legislation will receive a floor vote.
The office added that fellow conservative lawmakers will assist in efforts to bring the legislation to a vote.
The House is expected to finalize votes before the end of the week and recess until after the midterm elections.
