Gillis joked that women dress like “whores” at the gym, yet are outraged when men glance their way. The joke, delivered during his SNL hosting monologue earlier this month, prompted backlash that Carvey said he didn’t understand.

“I just didn’t understand the kerfuffle only because, to me, I just saw it as what we call — I’ll just say it — a joke,” he said on his podcast, “Fly on the Wall.”

“Like, when you say jokes, you’re not literally saying women are whores,” he said. “You are literally joking. Isn’t that kind of the idea? No?”

“Did I just get canceled?” Carvey joked. “Wasn’t it a joke?”

Carvey’s podcast co-host and fellow SNL alum, David Spade, also defended Gillis, saying if the joke gets laughs, it will get a pass, even if some people find it offensive.

“Listen, it got some laughs. I think he knows that one’s going to be a button-pusher, but he doesn’t care,” he said. “If something kills, it gets a pass. If something totally bombs, then they get in a lot of trouble.”

Spade added that he was confused about leftists promoting “sex work” as “real work” while being so offended by the term “whore.”

The pair also talked about how the SNL audience might not have been the ideal setting for the joke, noting that the show is typically packed with young women.

Carvey said Gillis likely “destroyed” with his gym jokes in the “10 comedy clubs he played that week,” but suggested the joke might not have worked as well on SNL.

During his monologue, Gillis joked about women’s attire at the gym, comparing it to artificial fish bait and mocking the idea that men can’t look without risking public shaming online.

“I haven’t been to the gym in so long, I didn’t know women just dress like whores now?” Gillis said. “You’ve seen the shorts? They’re those neon, like, artificial bait-colored [shorts], and the wrinkles go around the cheeks and all combine at the butthole. And don’t look! You’re not allowed to look.”

His joke sparked massive outrage from women online, who posted videos in their gym attire and called themselves “whores” reporting for duty. Some Hollywood figures also criticized Gillis. Most notably, actor Dan Levy condemned the joke in an online video rant, calling Gillis a misogynist.

I am just an average American. My teen years were in the late 70s and I participated in all that that decade offered. Started working young, too young. Then I joined the Army before I graduated High School. I spent 25 years in, mostly in Infantry units. Since then I've worked in information technology positions all at small family owned companies. At this rate I'll never be a tech millionaire. When I was young I rode horses as much as I could. I do believe I should have been a cowboy. I'm getting in the saddle again by taking riding lessons and see where it goes.
