Talarico Knocked Off The Campaign Trail By Flu With 34 Days To Go

A beet-red Texas Democratic Senate nominee James Talarico campaigned by video Wednesday after saying he had come down with the flu. 

Two days after holding a ritzy New York City fundraiser, Talarico apologized for missing a United States Hispanic Business Council event at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley.

“I was looking forward to being down in the Valley,” he said. “I’ve been talking about it all week. I was ready to eat my favorite quesabirria tacos, but I was starting to feel kind of under the weather a few days ago. And last night, it got so bad that I went to urgent care here in Dallas, and I was diagnosed with the flu.”

Talarico said he had a fever and was in the “most contagious” stage of the illness.

“I guess I’ve been shaking too many hands on the campaign trail, and so I want to keep everybody safe. And, you know, if I was passing on this illness to somebody and got someone’s grandmother or someone’s baby sick, I couldn’t live with myself,” Talarico said. “So I thought the best thing to do was to put safety first and put everyone’s health first.”

On Monday, Talarico and Ohio Democratic Senate nominee Sherrod Brown, who are both trying to flip Republican-held seats this November, headlined a Manhattan fundraiser hosted by actor Robert De Niro. The invitation listed jewelry designer and filmmaker Alexis Bittar at the top of the host committee and charged attendees between $500 and $27,000, The Daily Wire reported.

Bittar, who produced the documentary “Reclaim the Flag,” called the United States a “sh*thole” on July 3, the day before the country’s 250th birthday.

“I mean, I have three kids, and they’re little, and they’re growing up in this sh*thole,” Bittar told Interview magazine. “So if we don’t do something now, we’re f*cked.”

While Talarico stayed home, Vice President JD Vance was in South Texas to rally voters with just 34 days to go until Election Day. Speaking to Fox News, Vance tied Talarico’s unconventional views of Christianity into an economic pitch.

“This is a guy who supported men in women’s sports, who says that God is non-binary, who says there are six genders — and a guy with values like that and a voting record like that… He’s not going to stand up for your job, and he’s certainly not going to stand up for your values,” Vance said.

The vice president was there to break ground for Saronic’s Port Alpha in Brownsville, Texas, which is expected to produce thousands of jobs.

“What this facility will mean is that 10,000 families have a good paycheck. Ten thousand sons and daughters will see mom and dad go to work with purpose. Ten thousand people will know that their country is being built not by people outside of the United States, but by their own fellow citizens and their own people in their own community,” Vance said.

Talarico faces Texas Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton in November.
