Pike remains hospitalized with “serious effects” from the attempt, including significant injuries to both arms, her attorneys said in a statement.

“Christa remains critically ill and is receiving medical care for the devastating effects of Wednesday night’s events,” the lawyers’ statement read. “She is critically ill, unconscious, intubated and receiving breathing assistance through a ventilator.”

Her attorneys also filed an emergency motion to “protect and preserve” all evidence related to the botched execution.

During the attempt, Pike reportedly laughed, sang a Buddhist meditation, and eventually snored so loudly that one witness compared it to someone having “the best sleep of her life,” The Daily Wire reported. The witness described the sound as a “loud, deep in the back of the sinus cavity snore” resembling an old man sleeping.

Pike, 50, was scheduled to be executed at the Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville for the 1995 torture and murder of her classmate, Colleen Slemmer. She would have been the first woman executed by Tennessee in more than 200 years.

Before Pike, no inmate in the modern era of the death penalty had survived after lethal-injection drugs were administered. Seven people had previously survived failed execution attempts, but those executions were halted because medical officials failed to establish a backup IV line before any drugs were administered, according to the Death Penalty Information Center.

Tennessee used pentobarbital, a barbiturate also used in executions by other states and the federal government during President Donald Trump’s first term.

“The state of Tennessee has shown us again that they are not capable of carrying out an execution consistent with basic human dignity,” Pike’s attorney Randy Spivey said at a Thursday press conference. “Last night was not just inefficient; it was cruel, and it was torturous.”

In May, Tennessee also halted the execution of murderer Tony Carruthers after officials spent more than an hour unsuccessfully trying to establish an IV line. The state did not administer the lethal drugs, and Governor Bill Lee (R-TN) granted Carruthers a one-year reprieve, delaying his execution until at least May 2027.

Following Pike’s failed execution, Lee ordered a pause on all statewide executions through the end of the year and directed an independent review into what went wrong.

“Carrying out a lawfully imposed sentence is among the State’s most serious responsibilities, and the people of Tennessee expect it to be done in a manner that is not only legal and constitutional, but is effective,” Lee said.

I am just an average American. My teen years were in the late 70s and I participated in all that that decade offered. Started working young, too young. Then I joined the Army before I graduated High School. I spent 25 years in, mostly in Infantry units. Since then I've worked in information technology positions all at small family owned companies. At this rate I'll never be a tech millionaire. When I was young I rode horses as much as I could. I do believe I should have been a cowboy. I'm getting in the saddle again by taking riding lessons and see where it goes.
