Europeans were never crowned the best-smelling guests at the function, but boy, could they drink. Dirty French? Shake it off with a flute of champagne, a few spritzes of perfume, and a cigarette. Anti-shower European? No problem. Unwind with a Guinness, or lounge on a Spanish beach with a sangria in hand. Who cares if you smell? It’s Euro summer, baby. Get hot and steamy.

But the stereotype that our friends across the pond occasionally smelled a little funky was playful and often wrong, easily dismissed with a trip to Europe, or simply shrugged off by a continent too cool to care. That balance has been broken, though, by a wave of people who actually do reek, who wouldn’t know deodorant if it slapped them in the face, and who are now banning the one thing that kept Europeans legit: alcohol.

Bally Bagayoko, the far-Left Muslim mayor of Saint-Denis, the gritty banlieue north of Paris, has just banned the sale of alcohol inside the town’s train station between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m. Mais non! What will the French drink? Anyone who has lived in France knows the nation runs on café and booze, with water an afterthought. Don’t do this to them, Bagayoko!

But he can, apparently. Article L2212-2 of the General Code of Local Authorities entrusts mayors with ensuring order, safety, and hygiene, and Bagayoko ostensibly aims to quell the nighttime disturbances around the station by stripping Dionysiens of their liquid courage during the most romantic hours.

I lived in the arrondissement next door to Saint-Denis in 2023, and I can tell you the culprit behind the crime that creeps out after dark is not takeaway champagne.

The blame belongs to leftist policy: ushering in immigrants of varying cultural norms, eroding consequences for criminals until they grow bolder, and systematically prizing “root causes,” anti-discrimination rhetoric, and institutional skepticism of police over consistent deterrence, enforcement, and cultural assimilation.

Thanks for ruining everything, progressistes. But you can’t blame the French commies alone for the devastation of a once-beautiful, sexy, vibrant city. Hold your nose and call out their abettors too: the Islamists, who team up with them in a red-green alliance to seize power, trading the perfume of a free people for the stench of parallel societies.

Mayor Bagayoko’s ban is small but telling. As migration trends intensify, the French demographer Jean-Claude Chesnais warned that “there will be an overall mingling of cultures and civilisations that may lead, as far as France is concerned, to the emergence of a predominantly African population and to rapid Islamization.”

Practicing Muslims do not drink. In neighborhoods where their share of the population rises sharply, the social consensus around alcohol as a normal, public, everyday pleasure weakens. What begins as a response to nighttime disorder around a train station can become, over time, a broader accommodation of more restrictive norms. Parallel societies form; one grows in population size and political weight, while the old habits of the Judeo-Christian host society are gradually squeezed out. Then suddenly a glass of Bordeaux isn’t just curfewed; it’s condemned.

In France. Where water is wine and wine is, well, also wine.

But this watermelon coalition isn’t just stealing the joy from that midnight rush of finding a mini-market after the bars close, grabbing one last nightcap, and wandering to the Seine to yap until you yawn. It’s also stripping the hygiene from the morning routines of commies across Europe.

A massive tent encampment, thousands strong, has taken over the Puerta del Sol in Madrid, in what early reports described as a “protest on behalf of the housing crisis.” Again, gracias, progresistas. But it quickly became an excuse for an aggrieved and bored camp of communists, anarchists, pro-Palestinian groups, and assorted activists to spill onto the streets, cultivate bacteria in their armpits, and protest the shower.

Now the dichotomy between Spain’s political forces sharpens by the musty minute, with commentators branding the protesters “subsidized, dirty Spain” and their mockers “the Spain that works and showers.” Conservative Spaniards are trying to rid the streets of the encampment by draping Spanish flags around their shoulders and hoisting bottles of shampoo, urging the socialist-lovers to use them.

It’s hilarious. And typical.

Whether you call it socialism, communism, or leftist policy, the mechanisms match and the patterns share the same stench. Public services rot, then basic maintenance collapses, then filth becomes the background noise of daily life. In the Soviet Union, communal apartments and crumbling housing stock were ubiquitous. If an elevator broke, it stayed broken; trash piled up in courtyards, and hot water was more rumor than reality. Same with Mao’s China; the impoverished citizens saw famine and forced labor camps because of a collectivism that wasn’t warm, but deathly cold.

The modern versions look and smell similar. Venezuela under Chávez and Maduro went from one of Latin America’s richest countries to a land of garbage mountains and hospitals without soap or running water. Cuba still rations basic hygiene products. In Western cities with prolonged Left-led governance and heavy street encampments, like San Francisco and Portland, or now Sol itself, the same markers appear: waste, odor, and zombies addicted to the Blues and to the bluest-of-blue policies that put them there.

Look at France. Look at Spain. Look at the United Kingdom. Their trouble is a burgeoning welfare state built on leftist demands to hand everyone and their mother entitlements with no need to work, plus open borders that admitted cultures that are anathema to theirs, plus a replacement theory that is actively supplanting the heirs of 1789 with sharia believers. That is how they got there. That’s how they got so stinky.

If you don’t like what you see through those red-green colored glasses — filth, squalor, and alcohol bans — then stop ordering the socialism special while expecting the Bordeaux to keep flowing, mon chéri.

I am just an average American. My teen years were in the late 70s and I participated in all that that decade offered. Started working young, too young. Then I joined the Army before I graduated High School. I spent 25 years in, mostly in Infantry units. Since then I've worked in information technology positions all at small family owned companies. At this rate I'll never be a tech millionaire. When I was young I rode horses as much as I could. I do believe I should have been a cowboy. I'm getting in the saddle again by taking riding lessons and see where it goes.
