American Federation of Teachers (AFT) President Randi Weingarten has launched a war against the Department of Transportation — specifically over the department’s efforts to root out illegal aliens who hold commercial drivers’ licenses (CDLs).

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy released an ad on Tuesday calling out Weingarten’s move, accusing her and the AFT of protecting illegal aliens with CDLs — some of whom could be driving school buses all across the United States.

Indeed, Weingarten’s union released a statement joining a lawsuit against the Transportation Department almost immediately after Secretary Duffy announced the closure of more than 100 commercial trucking schools.

The main reason for the closures, Duffy said in a statement, was the lack of English proficiency in graduates of those schools — a violation of federal law.

“You have to speak English to operate a commercial vehicle. I didn’t create that rule; President Trump didn’t create that rule. That rule has been in place for a decade,” Duffy said during a press conference in late August. “We have schools that know the rule, and still pass people through their school who can’t speak the language.”

“Our investigators went into 400 driver training schools, and we found that 40% of these that we investigated did not meet the rules and the requirements of our regulations,” Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Administrator Derek Barrs said, “When schools certify underqualified drivers, these drivers get behind the wheel of an 80,000-pound truck, and they kill people. That should make you all upset.”

“Many of these certified state testers actually aren’t adequately testing the potential drivers that they’re gonna license. In one state, there’s ten skills testers … who have given over 2,000 driver’s licenses to people who can’t speak English,” Duffy added.

Within days, Weingarten moved to fight Duffy’s order.

“Today, the AFT moved to join an ongoing lawsuit against the U.S. Department of Transportation, seeking to stop the agency from seizing the personal records of 17 million commercial driver’s license (CDL) holders from the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators, the nonprofit that maintains the national database of driver records.”

“Many AFT members require a CDL to work as school bus drivers or Department of Transportation employees — and we must protect them and their privacy against the vindictive nature of this president and his cronies,” said Weingarten. “Just like we sued the Department of Government Efficiency for trying to mine personal information from millions of working-class Americans, today we intervene against the U.S. government’s attempt to strong-arm the AAMVA to turn over CDL holders’ private information. This illegal demand puts millions of people’s personal data up for grabs without their consent, people who had no choice but to provide their personal information to the states so they could simply work, and who have no way to remove it from the database.”

The only “private information” Weingarten appears to be trying to protect is the number of drivers who have obtained CDLs while in the United States illegally or who have done so despite a lack of proficiency in the English language.

I am just an average American. My teen years were in the late 70s and I participated in all that that decade offered. Started working young, too young. Then I joined the Army before I graduated High School. I spent 25 years in, mostly in Infantry units. Since then I've worked in information technology positions all at small family owned companies. At this rate I'll never be a tech millionaire. When I was young I rode horses as much as I could. I do believe I should have been a cowboy. I'm getting in the saddle again by taking riding lessons and see where it goes.
