Tony Romo Hit With 3 New Citations, Further Clouding CBS Future

Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and CBS Sports NFL analyst Tony Romo is facing three additional citations stemming from his July arrest for allegedly operating a vehicle while intoxicated, further clouding his future in the CBS broadcast booth.

Milwaukee County court records show Romo was cited Thursday for first-offense operating while intoxicated, unsafe passing on the right side, and possessing open intoxicants inside his vehicle. The new citations bring the total number of citations connected to the July 23 traffic stop to four, after Romo was previously cited for refusing to take an intoxication test following his arrest.

The 46-year-old was stopped while driving southbound on Interstate 43 in Milwaukee after a deputy allegedly observed him passing vehicles on the right and cutting across an area separating interstate traffic from an entrance ramp. According to authorities, Romo performed poorly on standardized field sobriety tests.

Body camera footage released after the arrest showed Romo telling officers he had been playing in the Wisconsin Amateur Championship golf tournament and was headed to visit his grandparents. Officers later found an open alcoholic beverage in the passenger area of his vehicle.

Romo was arrested, booked, and released. Under Wisconsin law, the matter is being handled as a civil traffic case rather than a criminal offense. A spokesperson for Romo said Thursday that the former quarterback “accepts full responsibility” for his actions and is taking steps to resolve the matter.

“Tony accepts full responsibility for his actions and has taken proactive steps to ensure that this isolated civil matter is properly resolved,” the spokesperson said. “We are working with local authorities to bring this matter to a close and we are communicating with CBS about next steps.”

Romo’s status at CBS has remained uncertain since the network placed him on leave “until further notice” on July 31.

CBS Sports President David Berson said earlier this month that the network had no timetable for deciding when — or whether — Romo would return to the broadcast booth. “It’s an evolving situation and therefore we’re still assessing,” Berson said at the time. “There is no timetable or final decision at this time.” Berson also acknowledged that CBS was considering the impact of the controversy on the network’s “image” and “brand.”

J.J. Watt has stepped into Romo’s place alongside Jim Nantz and sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson on CBS’ top NFL broadcast team as the 2026 season approaches. Romo, who joined CBS in 2017 after retiring from the NFL, has been one of the network’s most prominent personalities and signed a reported 10-year, $180 million contract extension in 2020.

His next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 21.

The additional citations do not represent a new arrest or criminal charges. They do add to the legal matter CBS is already evaluating as the network prepares to begin another NFL season without its longtime lead analyst.
