In a jaw-dropping display of historical revisionism, U.S. Ambassador to Turkey Tom Barrack took the stage at the Global Security Forum in Doha to whitewash centuries of blood-soaked Middle Eastern history and lay down a glowing defense of the brutal regime in Tehran.

Barrack, spinning a fairy tale of pre-1948 harmony, declared that antisemitism wasn’t a major problem before the modern state of Israel was founded.

“I grew up in a Lebanese immigrant family in a Jewish neighborhood. … There was no antisemitism in the U.S. It just didn’t exist. Very little antisemitism even in the region,” Barrack said. “The Jews existed side by side forever. Zionism in 1948 became another issue.”

He didn’t stop there. Reaching deep into his bag of outrageous apologia, Barrack defended the murderous Iranian government.

“It’s not an evil regime,” Barrack said. “That has nothing to do with it. That’s a religious content and practice that we all respect.”

To cap off his bizarre world tour, Barrack praised anti-Israel zealot Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) as a “sensational Democratic senator” and gushed that Qatar has been “endlessly patient” with the United States.

Barrack’s assertion that there was little to no antisemitism before 1948 is pure fantasy. The historical record long before the modern state of Israel is marked by centuries of forced conversions, massacres, and systemic oppression across the region.

Early Caliphates (624–640s): The expulsion and slaughter of Medina’s Jewish tribes (Banu Qaynuqa, Banu Nadir, and Banu Qurayza), in which hundreds of adult men were executed and women enslaved, set an early precedent, culminating in Caliph Umar’s total expulsion of Jews from the Hijaz.

Medieval Massacres: In 1033, a fanatical force sacked the Moroccan city of Fez, slaughtering roughly 6,000 Jews. In the 1066 Granada Massacre, a rioting mob killed the Jewish vizier Joseph ibn Naghrela and wiped out an estimated 1,500 Jewish families.

Forced Exile & Restrictions: In 1267, Mamluk Sultan Baybars barred Jews from the Cave of the Patriarchs in Hebron. That ban was enforced for 700 years until 1967. The 1679 Mawza Exile saw Yemeni authorities force Jews into the desert, where a large share of the exiles, by some accounts two-thirds, perished.

19th and 20th Century Violence: Long before 1948, the 1834 Safed and Hebron pogroms, the 1840 Damascus blood libel, and the 1912 Tritel in Fez occurred; Safed and Fez were plundered with dozens killed. Then there was the catastrophic 1941 Farhud pogrom in Baghdad; at least 180 Jews were killed, and some estimates run to 600 or more.

The despotic regime in Tehran that Barrack said is “not evil” has brutally murdered protesters for decades. Iran hanged thousands of political prisoners in 1988 alone, murdered dissenters in the “Chain Murders,” and gunned down thousands of protesters in the streets, including more than 7,000 dead in the deadly January 2026 crackdowns, (with some estimates saying tens of thousands).

Barrack’s revisionist performance in Doha is the culmination of a deeply troubling pattern of behavior and antipathy toward Israel.

In December 2025, at the Doha Forum, Barrack openly questioned whether Israel is even a democracy, floating the absurd idea that a “benevolent monarchy” is the best model for the Middle East, while pushing to include Turkey, which backs Hamas, in Gaza’s stabilization force. In April 2026, speaking in Turkey, he drew a moral equivalency between Israel and Hezbollah, calling them “equally untrustworthy.” He went on to praise Ankara for refusing to designate Hamas as a terrorist organization, drawing fire from the late Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL), while commentator Mark Levin called him an “Erdogan mouthpiece.”

In his most explosive move, Barrack publicly blamed Israel for “unnecessary escalation” in August after it struck a Turkish-linked airbase in Syria. He doubled down on a podcast by calling the Golan Heights “occupied territory” in direct opposition to established American foreign policy, forcing a humiliated diplomatic retraction two days later.

I am just an average American. My teen years were in the late 70s and I participated in all that that decade offered. Started working young, too young. Then I joined the Army before I graduated High School. I spent 25 years in, mostly in Infantry units. Since then I've worked in information technology positions all at small family owned companies. At this rate I'll never be a tech millionaire. When I was young I rode horses as much as I could. I do believe I should have been a cowboy. I'm getting in the saddle again by taking riding lessons and see where it goes.
