While the president framed the case as a tragedy and Kevin Reddington as a good lawyer, Trump noted that Clancy is facing state charges, suggesting he couldn’t intervene even if he wanted to.

“It’s a very sad situation. … There is no winner there — there’s no win no matter what you do; three children are dead,” Trump told the press. “It’s actually a state situation, not a federal.”

The reporter followed up by telling Trump that Reddington wanted the president to pressure the state prosecutor. “Would you do that?” he asked.

“I hope they can work it out, that’s something they have to work out,” Trump responded. “There is no win there.”

Reddington called on Trump to pardon Clancy after a mistrial was declared earlier this month. The jury deliberated for days, but ultimately, a lone juror refused to agree that Clancy was not guilty by reason of insanity in killings, according to fellow jurors.

Reddington’s appeal seemed to be strategic and not actually practical, since Clancy is facing state charges for killing her three children, not federal charges. When he was pressed about the discrepancy, he suggested Trump should pressure the state prosecutor on the case.

“Trump would be able to reach out to one of his Department of Justice people, … maybe talk to [District Attorney] Tim Cruz, and maybe bring some pressure,” Reddington said.

“But why do you want to encourage the president of the United States to pressure a local DA on a state prosecution?” he was pressed on NBC, to which he responded, “I don’t care if Mahatma Gandhi came down and pressured him into doing something, because I do not believe that this is … a righteous prosecution.”

It’s unclear if Clancy will be retried for her crimes, as that decision is up to the state.

I am just an average American. My teen years were in the late 70s and I participated in all that that decade offered. Started working young, too young. Then I joined the Army before I graduated High School. I spent 25 years in, mostly in Infantry units. Since then I've worked in information technology positions all at small family owned companies. At this rate I'll never be a tech millionaire. When I was young I rode horses as much as I could. I do believe I should have been a cowboy. I'm getting in the saddle again by taking riding lessons and see where it goes.
