“If companies want to make their Data Centers popular, pay the community, and/or individuals within the community, a ‘dividend,’” Trump posted on Truth Social early Wednesday morning. “I have watched the process closely, and Data Centers that were highly unpopular in a certain area, have become extremely popular when a financial deal is struck. MAKE DEALS, and get them built.”
Trump has embraced data center development and previously said communities who reject them would end up “backwards and poor.” While some data center developers have paid millions into community development funds, other communities have rejected monetary offers from data center developers.
Last month, The Wall Street Journal reported that many residents of Hazle Township, Pennsylvania, did not plan on taking the offered $10,000 per household for construction of a data center in the community. Two Kentucky women also turned down over $26 million to sell their farmland to a developer.

Data centers have become a controversial issue ahead of the midterm elections and both Republican and Democrat candidates have run from previous pro-development positions. That shift has come as concerns emerge that data centers could use up local resources and run up electricity costs.
In his Truth Social post, Trump argued that there would be no increase in electricity costs from data centers.
“As the President of the United States, I have been watching Data Centers very closely, and have come to a very strong conclusion. New and large, in some cases gigantic, Data Centers are mandated by me to make their own electricity, and give or sell any excess back to the local community, or grid, and therefore there is [no] electric price increase. In fact, there could be a substantial decrease. Other elements likewise!”
Trump has argued that communities who reject data centers will be left behind economically and that China will benefit from the “anti Data Center movement” because the communist country will be able to develop its artificial intelligence technology faster than the United States.
In New York, Democrat Governor Kathy Hochul signed a one-year ban on the approval of new hyperscale data centers. Similar ideas have been embraced across the country, even by some Republicans.
Michigan Senate candidate Mike Rogers came out in support of a one-year data center moratorium.
“I think we need to take a pause, probably, and make sure that we’re answering all the questions that people have,” he said in August. “While I don’t support a federal ban, Michigan needs stronger guardrails to protect community control, prevent utility price hikes, protect our water and stop pay-to-play schemes.”
