Warner’s Opponent Is No Murkowski on the SAVE America Act.

In a master class on controlling the narrative, the American Left has so convincingly gaslit the political class into believing that the SAVE America Act would be viewed by their constituents as voter suppression that more GOP leaders are creating increasingly convoluted stories to justify why they oppose making sure that only U.S. citizens vote in U.S. elections.

The most hysterical is Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, who took the floor of the Senate chamber to tell her colleagues that if the SAVE America Act passed, residents of the remote Aleutian community of Unalaska could be forced to fly roughly 800 air miles to Anchorage to obtain an ID, at a cost of $1,100 to $1,300 for a one-way ticket, plus lodging and ground transportation. The claim was so specific that, in his latest undercover video, James O’Keefe flew to Unalaska, where he visited the Unalaska DMV, public library, City Hall, and post office. Officials at each location said residents needed only to come in and apply.

Wow! The only explanation one can imagine for this mistake must be that when Murkowski first went to Washington in 2002, after succeeding her father, Frank Murkowski, who had been a U.S. senator since 1981, there might not have been all those modern conveniences there.

So now, as Virginia gets ready to begin its next 45-day excursion into early voting and lower voter turnout, and the midterms loom, the commonwealth’s U.S. House incumbents all voted in favor of the measure, even those in tight reelection contests, such as Rep. Jen Kiggans, R-Va. Our senators promised support of the “zombie filibuster”—the one in which no one needs to hold the floor with a speech, but can instead simply call for a cloture vote—so the legislation remains short of the 60 votes needed to move through the Senate.

One of those senators is Sen. Mark Warner, D-Va., who is in his own reelection race against retired Army Maj. Gen. Bert Mizusawa. Warner made his official position on the plan known by way of a joint statement issued with Sen. Tim Kaine, D-Va.: “If signed into law, the SAVE America Act could strip millions of Americans of their ability to vote by imposing unnecessary and burdensome verification requirements.”

Those must be the same requirements Murkowski was talking about. Note that Warner doesn’t say, “U.S. citizens.” Gotta love it when the lawyers edit the copy to keep it “truthy.”

Oddly, when you ask Google about Mizusawa’s position, it links to only one article while saying he does not have a clear position on the legislation. I’ll explain why that is important in a moment. That article, ironically, was written by me for this publication. This result struck me as odd because I’m a pretty good authority on what I write (most of the time), and the article included this quote from Bert: “Yes, I would actually ask [Majority Leader] John Thune to change the Senate rules, get rid of the filibuster. The SAVE America Act is so essential for a democracy. We need to get that through. And then if he can change the rules back, fine. But let’s get that through. Let’s get all the black-and-white issues passed. So, I’m a big proponent of doing that.”

Sounds specific to me.

While I appreciate the top spot in the search results, I think Gemini’s summary is a serious instance of election interference because, given GOP activists’ feelings about senators like Murkowski, making the general appear to be dodging the issue could cost him enough votes to swing an election that may struggle to reach 50% voter turnout.

The last time Warner faced reelection in a midterm-only cycle, in 2014, he won by only 17,727 votes, far fewer than the 300,000 Gov. Abigail Spanberger alluded to during her speech at the voting rights rally in Washington.
