When Being Shocking Becomes Embarrassing

The MTV Video Music Awards happened this week. A lot of people paid no attention to it for one salient reason: Why would they?

But something there was stunning, in its own way: Madonna, who has reemerged with a new album.

She is 68 years old.

That means she is about the same age as Estelle Getty was in “The Golden Girls,” and she performed with Charli XCX in a bathroom-stall set.

That’s because nothing says class and decency like bathroom stalls. When I say the Left has no actual language to condemn promiscuity and grating behavior, that’s not all; they uphold them. For them, it’s an aspect of freedom.

The Left will say that degrading behavior is not degrading as long as there is consent.

But degrading behavior remains degrading even if you consent to it.

Madonna, who can barely move at this point, won a bunch of awards.

We have frozen our culture in time because the Left can go no further. Once you say everything is wonderful and transgressive, once you transgress all the rules, there are no more rules to transgress. There’s no place you can go from there. There’s nothing for them to even rebel against.

You couldn’t call what she did dancing. She walked around with very young men and then simulated sex acts in what were presumably bathroom stalls. She was gyrating all over the place.

Madonna is doing this at 68 years old because we simply have not progressed one iota as a culture. Madonna used to be someone who transgressed all the rules back in 1980, and now she’s someone who is the rules in 2026.

She had 13 nominations and took home seven awards, including Best Dance.

Madonna won Best Dance? She was staggering around out there. She looked like she needed a walker.

After the show, Madonna posted a video of herself, Charli XCX, and Julia Garner rolling around in bed. Madonna is 68, and Garner is 32.

I wish I had more to say about it than simply, “We have done wonders with our culture.”

In truth, it feels old and hackneyed. It feels played out. It feels like the same song played over and over.

But that’s what leftism is when you transgress all the rules, and there are no rules left. 

There’s nothing left that is transgressive or mildly interesting or even mildly titillating about this.

That’s because titillation is largely based on violation of norms. If there are no norms, then it just feels like people gyrating around on stage.

This is where we are in our culture. Madonna as a sex symbol at the age of 68.

I’m sure we’ll get an enormous number of think pieces saying, “This is liberating for the Boomers! It’s liberating for the elderly!”

I prefer a society where people my parents’ age are having wonderful, fulfilling, joyous lives with their grandchildren and families.

That was a better society back in the day and is still, for many people, a better society today.
