Lindsay Clancy’s murder trial may have ended in a mistrial, but attorneys are still working on a civil suit blaming hospitals and doctors for the “spiderweb of tragedy” that culminated in Clancy killing her three young children.

The lawsuit was first filed in January and accuses a number of medical professionals and hospitals of exacerbating the situation by failing to properly diagnose and treat Clancy’s condition in time to prevent tragedy.

Attorney Andrew Meyer explained, “She screamed out for help. She went to every available resource that you could possibly imagine, and more than many people would ever have imagined to try and get help, yet she continued to go on a downward spiral.”

Dr. Jennifer Tufts and nurse practitioner Rebecca Jollotta, both of whom testified during Clancy’s criminal trial, are named in the suit along with a number of others.

The suit alleges that the providers who treated Clancy failed to diagnose her with bipolar disorder and then proceeded to prescribe treatments that made her worse — and ultimately “exacerbated her condition and precipitated a severe psychotic break.”

That psychotic break, the suit alleges, is what led to Clancy hallucinating a man’s voice that told her to kill her children and then herself — and what brought her to the point where she was unable to control her own actions, leaving her feeling as though she was observing herself from the outside.

One example given in the lawsuit describes an adverse reaction Clancy had to the antidepressant Zoloft — as well as negative effects from Prozac and Seroquel — that should have been red flags for the doctors treating her.

The suit also mentions her consecutive calls in December 2022 to suicide hotlines and then to crisis support — both of which she said could not help her because she did not have a specific plan in mind to end her own life — and the fact that she then had herself admitted to McLean Hospital just weeks later. The care at McLean, according to the lawsuit, was substandard.

“Had this seed not been allowed to grow into, just, a tremendous spiderweb of tragedy, we wouldn’t be here today,” Meyer claimed.

Clancy’s criminal trial, which began on July 20, ended with a hung jury and a mistrial — and a dramatic eleventh-hour attempt by the defense to get the lone holdout thrown off the jury — but the next steps are still uncertain.

Clancy is being held at Tewksbury State Hospital pending a decision on a new criminal trial.

I am just an average American. My teen years were in the late 70s and I participated in all that that decade offered. Started working young, too young. Then I joined the Army before I graduated High School. I spent 25 years in, mostly in Infantry units. Since then I've worked in information technology positions all at small family owned companies. At this rate I'll never be a tech millionaire. When I was young I rode horses as much as I could. I do believe I should have been a cowboy. I'm getting in the saddle again by taking riding lessons and see where it goes.
