Brittney, an audience member who doesn’t have any children, said she disagreed with the “majority” of the room and their assertions that postpartum psychosis was to blame for Clancy’s actions.
“I do believe she’s a murderer,” Brittney said, prompting Winfrey to interject and ask incredulously, “After all you’ve heard today? You still…”
Brittney said she also disagrees with her mom, Jocelyn, who was a guest on the podcast taping. After Jocelyn detailed her own struggle with postpartum depression and said she “understands” what Clancy was going through, Brittney was given the chance to state her opinion.
“It’s just unfortunate that [my mom is] so quick to say… ‘You’ve never had a baby. You don’t understand what it’s like to go through all the hormonal shifts.’ But I just feel as though these were not instant deaths,” she went on.
“They weren’t gunshots to the head. She was here strangling her kids three times. You’re telling me like even after the first time she couldn’t snap out of it? You’re watching the life leave your kids’ eyes, you know? So, I know I hear everybody’s opinions and God bless mothers, but at the same, I just don’t understand how we can empathize.”
She added, “They weren’t strangers. They were her kids, and she was able to grab those exercise bands – that took a lot of effort. It breaks my heart that these young kids [went] through that.”
Brittney also mentioned how women have banded together to support Clancy for all the wrong reasons. “I feel like so many mothers empathize with her so much that they want to … make her a mascot and they’re turning something so negative into a movement.”
Winfrey dove into the Lindsay Clancy trial and postpartum psychosis in a new episode of “The Oprah Podcast,” which aired on Thursday. “The Lindsay Clancy Case, Understanding Postpartum Psychosis” included an interview with Meg Hamp, a nurse who worked alongside Lindsay for seven years and testified at her trial, along with medical experts, legal scholars, and women who are said to have personally experienced postpartum psychosis.
The majority of the episode was one-sided in favor of Clancy being unaccountable for her actions due to being overmedicated and suffering from postpartum psychosis.
Clancy was accused of first-degree murder after admitting to strangling her three young children. The judge declared a mistrial on September 4 after the jury was deadlocked three times.
