World Leader Points Finger Straight At Iran For Attack That Imperiled US Military

The British government believes Iran played a role in the suspected terror plot near RAF Fairford that resulted in five men being arrested, Prime Minister Andy Burnham said Wednesday.

“There are strong indications that Iran played a part in what happened over the weekend at RAF Fairford,” Burnham told the BBC, while emphasizing that the case remains an “ongoing, complex, and serious police investigation.”

“We will say more in due course, but we can confirm our belief that we believe Iran to have played a part,” he added.

Burnham said British authorities are working closely with the United States as the investigation continues.

The five men, all British nationals in their 20s from London, were released on police bail Monday following extensive interviews and inquiries — a decision that President Donald Trump later questioned.

“I will tell you, I would have said, ‘Don’t let them have bail.’ I’m surprised that they released them. I wouldn’t have done that,” Trump said Monday.

Burnham defended the decision, stressing that the suspects remain under strict bail conditions.

“I think people need to understand that when it says released — that isn’t as people might think. It’s obviously with the strictest possible bail conditions,” Burnham said. “The authorities have this under the strongest grip and closest control, and I can assure you of that.”

The development follows U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s Monday statement that the incident “clearly involves the hands of a foreign actor.” However, he did not initially identify a country he believed was involved.

Iran has denied any connection to the incident. Iran’s embassy in London said it “categorically rejects and strongly condemns” what it described as speculation about Iranian involvement.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said in July that RAF Fairford was a legitimate target, according to Reuters.

RAF Fairford is a key military installation used by U.S. forces in Britain and has been used by American long-range bombers for operations in the Middle East. The base has recently been used in connection with U.S. military operations targeting Iran.

The incident was brought to authorities’ attention after a local farmer encountered the suspicious vehicles while driving home from a party in the early hours of Sunday.

The farmer told reporters that she came across three white vans blocking a quiet country road near the base. After turning around, she saw masked men, including some wearing balaclavas, scattering into nearby fields and trees. Some of the men appeared to run toward RAF Fairford.

“I just thought what the hell are they doing,” the farmer said, describing seeing the men near the vans. She said the situation immediately struck her as unusual because of the location and the proximity to the military installation.

“I mean, you don’t see masked men running around at half one in the morning in the countryside near a secure air base and not have concerns,” she said.

The farmer contacted police and alerted people in a local WhatsApp group, urging residents to lock their doors. 

Police initially arrested the men under the Explosives Act, then further arrested them on suspicion of preparing to carry out a terrorist act under Section 5 of the Terrorism Act. 

Authorities established a 400-meter cordon around the vehicles and evacuated approximately 85 households as military bomb disposal specialists examined the scene. Residents were later allowed to return home as the investigation continued.

Police have said no explosive devices were found during the examination of the vehicles, although petrol was recovered.
