Jason Turkish, a lifelong Democrat, said Wednesday that he plans to vote against El-Sayed, Stevens’ bitter rival in the Democratic primary that exposed deep party divisions.
Turkish told The Detroit News that he could not stomach what he characterized as El-Sayed’s antisemitic rhetoric and hostility toward Israel.
“We have never seen a candidate for U.S. Senate act so recklessly toward the safety of Jews in the community as we have seen from Abdul,” Turkish, a Democratic donor who is also Jewish, told the outlet.
He also cited “an escalation in his [El-Sayed’s] rhetoric since the primary, and it makes folks unsafe.”
“Every time he talks about genocide, Jews get death threats,” he added.

Turkish, who proposed to Stevens in August, attended a Rogers campaign event on Wednesday evening hosted by the Republican Jewish Coalition. The event, titled “Who Will Keep Us Safe? Rogers vs. El-Sayed,” featured the GOP nominee and Texas Sen. Ted Cruz.
Speaking to reporters, El-Sayed brushed off Turkish’s decision.
“If folks see another issue that is more important to them and decide that their disagreement with me on that is bigger than their disagreement with me on all these other things, that is their choice,” he said.
Turkish is the latest Democrat with close ties to Stevens to announce plans to vote for Rogers.
In a report published Tuesday, Stevens’s former campaign chair, David Kramer, told Jewish Insider that he plans to vote for Rogers, saying he doesn’t believe El-Sayed is serious about keeping the Jewish community safe.
“I have lots of issues with Mike Rogers, and I’m not even willing to use words like ‘support,’” Kramer told the outlet. “But I’ve made peace with voting for him because I do think that he at least does care about Jews being safe and participating in public life, and he seems to know the difference between an enemy of ours in Iran and an ally of ours [in Israel].”
