The women, who held a “Save Women’s Sports” banner at a Portland Thorns professional women’s soccer game on Sunday, were suddenly surrounded by pro-trans activists. Video from the scene shows at least one angry spectator swinging a flag at a pro-women activist as they shouted at each other.
“We were attacked by fans. We were hit with flags,” said Amy Sousa, one of the women who helped organize the demonstration.
The Justice Department is now investigating the clash.
“The Justice Department is aware of these reports and will review the matter thoroughly. Where the facts and the law warrant action, the Department will not hesitate to act,” a DOJ spokesman told Fox News.

A DOJ official said the department is looking into potential First Amendment violations.
“Based on what is known so far, the conduct described appears to raise viewpoint discrimination and First Amendment questions rather than sex discrimination,” said the official. “The Department is reviewing it.”
Sousa organized the protest with commentator Brandi Kruse. The two had earlier led rallies backing WNBA player Sophie Cunningham, who enraged the Left and many WNBA players and coaches over the summer with her comments on keeping men out of women’s sports. The group of 20 women unveiled their flag at halftime as well as their XX-XY t-shirts, an apparel brand built around the message that women’s sports should be reserved for women.
The t-shirts have enraged leftists at sporting events in the past.
In July, a WNBA team co-owner reportedly harassed and cursed at teen girls who were wearing XX-XY t-shirts. The girls said that Seattle Storm co-owner Celeste Keaton stormed up to them and told them they were “f*cking insane.”
The girls also held a sign that read, “Thank you Sophie for speaking up for girls.”
“I got a lot of negative feedback about me hating trans. And I’m like, ‘I never once said that,’” Cunningham said in an ESPN profile published in July. “I think that I am here to extend love. But I also think with that love is truth, being honest. And I want to protect young girls in a locker room, or young girls in sport who shouldn’t have to go against biological men.”
