- Vivek Ramaswamy continues to defend his campaign’s ad going after Democrat Amy Acton.
- He points out that the ad is about lying rather than childhood sexual abuse.
- Ramaswamy also reminds that his opponent has gone after him and his family.
Days after his campaign took ownership of an ad that’s gone viral, Republican Vivek Ramaswamy continues to defend himself against his Democratic opponent in Ohio’s gubernatorial race.
During an Ohio Republican Party tour bus stop at the Pizza Cottage & Tipton Tavern in Powell, Ohio, Ramaswamy gave a powerful defense of the ad, along with strong words about the reaction.
The ad, which appeared on social media late last Monday night, features Democrat opponent Amy Acton’s estranged mother, Donna Arthur, calling her daughter a liar and saying people shouldn’t vote for her.
As he whipped up the crowd about turning out to vote, he urged Ohioans to “protect common sense over insanity … [and] protect freedom over socialism and communism … [and] the rule of law over lawlessness and criminality in our streets.”
Ramaswamy also warned of the campaign fight having “some tricks along the way.”
“You’re smart enough to see through it—[this] made-up controversy over the last several days,” he said, calling the media and the Democratic Party “two sides of the same coin.”
Ramaswamy then took the opportunity to attack Acton’s record, especially her role as the health director under Republican Gov. Mike DeWine, in which she falsely said the death rate during the COVID-19 pandemic was 50%. He also noted revelations about 911 calls made at Acton’s home related to a domestic dispute.
“One of the things that she’s done is she’s lied about me in this campaign,” Ramaswamy said. He also called out Acton for how “she defames [his] own mother in a press release.”
“That deserves to be corrected. Voters deserve to know what the truth is, and the truth is that this woman is a liar,” the Republican said.
Ramaswamy then directly addressed the ad.
“We ran an ad that said she is a liar in this campaign and over the course of her record—now they don’t want to answer for that. They play the classic trick that the Left loves to play: … [They’re] going to change the subject to something else totally different that the ad had nothing to do with, which is about childhood abuse.”
He also took the opportunity to address how he would govern on that issue, claiming that he would be “the strongest governor in prosecuting childhood abuse or any other form of abuse in the state.”
He went on to blame the media for the controversy, saying they will “deflect” and “do everything in their power to try to prop up the Democrat game.”
Although the controversial ad addresses Acton’s claims about living in a tent, her campaign released a statement that she suffered childhood sexual abuse from her stepfather, whom her mother remained married to until his death.
When asked on Monday’s “Fox & Friends” program if he regretted producing the ad, Ramaswamy replied, “You never start a fight, but if you find yourself in one, you finish it.”
“You have to stand for what is right and what is true,” he added. “They’ve attacked me and they’ve defamed my mother, to media silence. It’s unbelievable, and yet at the same time they’ll trot out anything to attack a Republican.”
“The fact of the matter is I am running against somebody who is crazy, unstable, and dishonest, and even more importantly, they represent crazy and unstable and dishonest ideas.”
The ad has recently been shortened to 30 seconds for television viewing. Claims about Acton living in a tent are no longer included in that version.
