Dem Congresswoman Hospitalized After Hit-And-Run Crash

Rep. Marcy Kaptur (D-OH) was hospitalized on Sunday after her vehicle was involved in a hit-and-run crash near Toledo, Ohio.

The crash occurred around 10:45 a.m. local time, and two people were taken to the hospital for evaluation. Kaptur, 80, was one of them. Reports thus far have not indicated whether Kaptur was driving the vehicle at the time or was a passenger.

The crash was classified by local authorities as a “hit-skip,” meaning that someone who was involved in the incident had fled the scene.

A representative from the Toledo Police Department told reporters that the investigation into Sunday morning’s accident was still in the preliminary stages, and that more information would be made available as they were able to piece things together. Police did not indicate whether or not the driver who fled the scene had been located.

Kaptur’s office released a statement early Sunday afternoon, saying in part that the congresswoman was doing well and hoped to be back at work as soon as possible.

“This morning Congresswoman Kaptur was a passenger in a vehicle on her way to a church service when the car she was traveling in was struck. She is active, alert, and being treated for non-life threatening injuries,” the statement began. “We look forward to additional information from Toledo Police as they investigate the accident. Congresswoman Kaptur is thankful for the quick actions of first responders from Toledo Police and Fire Departments who arrived promptly on scene, and the medical professionals helping to take care of those involved in the crash.”

The statement concluded, “She expressed her deep gratitude to the hundreds of constituents who have reached out and looks forward to returning to a full schedule soon.”

Kaptur holds the honor of being the longest-serving woman in Congress.
