In a moving interview with CBS Mornings on Wednesday, Stella Parton revealed that her sister Dolly hid her cancer diagnosis simply because she couldn’t stand to see her millions of devoted fans or her family wracked with worry.

Dolly, who passed away on August 25 at age 80 after a brief battle with the disease, lived her life in the light and wanted to keep it that way until the very end, keeping the devastating news restricted to only her closest circle.
“Dolly could not bear negative things,” Stella explained, noting that the “Jolene” singer would be deeply moved by the massive, global outpouring of affection following her passing.
“And she would not have wanted her fans worried about it,” Stella continued. “She didn’t want a lot of the family worried about it. Some of us knew, the ones that were closer. Not every relative. … She did not want people sad. … She’d be really happy and delighted that people have shown her so much love because she knew that that would make us feel better.”
On Instagram, Stella has blasted the wave of “fake AI garbage” and insensitive fabrications flooding social media platforms like TikTok and X. She called on the public to turn off those posts and show basic human decency, urging fans to mirror Dolly’s lifelong legacy of tolerance and respect.
“Sadly, because of the way our lives have been lived in front of the public, we have no choice but to be subjected to incredible pressure and insensitivity from strangers,” she wrote. “There is a tremendous amount of AI and endless garbage being posted everyday and it’s been challenging to absorb and or ignore.”
Despite the social media noise, the world is preparing to celebrate Dolly Parton’s legacy. Her estate announced that plans are moving forward for “DollyFest: The Celebration of a Lifetime,” a double-weekend tribute originally conceived by Dolly for her 80th birthday.
As her nephew Bryan Seaver fittingly put it, “But sadness lies with us, not with Dolly. Dolly has lived in the light and is in the arms of Jesus.”
