On July 13, ICE officers conducting a “routine enforcement operation” outside Nashville in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, an area with a large population of illegal immigrants, were stopped in their tracks when they saw a small child who was wandering alone in the road in a heavily soiled diaper and was almost struck by a passing vehicle, the agency said. It appeared that the young child had been roaming the streets for several hours without any adult supervision.
The ICE officers, some of whom are fathers, quickly took the child into safety.
Officer Michael Joyce, who is part of an ICE Nashville Fugitive Operations Team, said the young boy was standing in the middle of the parking lot when he arrived. The brave officer blocked traffic while his team called local police and located the child’s mother, who was asleep in a nearby apartment with the door wide-open.
She appeared to be unaware that her son had wandered off.
“Our officers are trained to respond to emergencies and protect the public, no matter the circumstances,” ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations New Orleans acting Field Office Director Scott Ladwig, whose office oversees operations in Tennessee, said in a statement.
“We’re grateful that our team was able to act quickly and help ensure this child’s safety,” Ladwig said. “Supporting our communities and working alongside local law enforcement is a responsibility we take seriously.”
The Murfreesboro Police Department returned the little boy to his mother, who told officers that it was the first time her child left their home alone, ICE said. No criminal charges were filed against the mother.
Officials also notified the Tennessee Department of Children’s Services.
