Guide to America’s Historic Landmarks—Without the Left-Wing Bias
To help celebrate America’s 250th birthday, The Heritage Foundation is releasing an interactive map and guide to America’s historic sites that is designed to help families enjoy history together accurately and without the Left’s ideological lens.
“The Heritage Guide to Historic Sites: Rediscovering America’s Heritage” at historicsites.heritage.org “equips American families with the tools they need to enjoy the sites that mark some of the greatest episodes in our nation’s history, without the Left’s anti-American and ahistoric narratives,” Heritage Foundation President Kevin Roberts said.
“The next 250 years of our republic depend on whether we can rekindle a true understanding of what it means to be an American—the rights and responsibilities of American citizenship,” remarked Roberts.
Heritage Foundation scholars evaluated and graded more than 35 sites in the states that formed the 13 original colonies. The think tank says it plans to extend ratings to historic sites in all 50 states plus the District of Columbia for Presidents Day 2026.
The scholars made extensive visits to each site, created in-depth reviews, and included a letter grade based on the historical accuracy of the site and its exhibits and noted any ideological bias present at the facility or in its tours.
The scholars also recommended accompanying reading and supplementary materials to gain an even greater understanding of each site and its context in American history.
“From Mount Vernon and Independence Hall to Fort McHenry and Gettysburg, this guide invites every American citizen to rediscover the amazing places that define our patriotism and the stories that form the basis of our shared national culture,” the director of the guide, Heritage research fellow Brenda Hafera, said.
“The Heritage Foundation is proud to lead this effort to celebrate ‘America 250.’ We believe this guide will awaken a new generation of patriots—men and women ready to remember and defend the history that makes us who we are,” she said.
You can access the guide here and also learn more about the site selection and evaluation process.
