Lane Kiffin’s Messy Ole Miss Exit Sparked FBI Sweep

Lane Kiffin’s messy departure from the University of Mississippi apparently sparked enough paranoia inside the Rebels’ football program that an FBI agent was brought in to check the team’s facility for potential listening devices.

“We actually had the FBI come through and walk the building for bugs and for everything,” Walker Jones, a senior figure in Ole Miss’ name, image, and likeness operation, revealed last week. “We knew kind of what was in Baton Rouge, and we knew how they operated.”

“I remember getting on my knees and looking underneath the desk, like checking for, is there some sort of bug in my office? Somebody was like, ‘What are you doing?’ I’m like, ‘You just trust me, you don’t know this guy like I do,'” Jones said, referring to Kiffin.

Kiffin left Ole Miss abruptly in November 2025, just days after he led the team to an 11-1 regular season and its first-ever College Football Playoff spot. When he accepted the LSU job, he wanted to remain in Oxford to coach Ole Miss through the playoffs, but Athletic Director Keith Carter rejected Kiffin’s request, and the school promoted defensive coordinator Pete Golding to replace him. Golding then led the Rebels to two playoff wins before they were knocked out by Miami in the semifinals.

Kiffin took members of his Ole Miss staff with him to LSU, including offensive coordinator Charlie Weis Jr. and tight end coach Joe Cox.

Kiffin has since said that he loved Ole Miss and had a “wonderful experience” there but viewed the opportunity at LSU as a challenge he needed to take on.

“You needed Oxford and Ole Miss more than they needed you, and that can totally be true,” he said in May 2026.

Golding, the new Ole Miss coach, confirmed to reporters Monday that a federal officer was involved, but indicated that Jones’ account may have exaggerated events.

“In any bowl game or playoff situation, you’re obviously going to increase security,” Golding said. “I’m not sure that there was a hiring process of, ‘Here we go with the FBI,’” Golding said.

“I do think we probably have a current player whose dad happens to work for the FBI and lives in town,” he continued. “It wasn’t some situation where we said, ‘Oh my gosh, get in here.’”

“Any time you get into the playoff system and you have guys from this building go to other places, you want to make sure things are secure for your players,” Golding added.
