The 85-year-old TV personality has drawn heavy criticism after sharing a photo of herself on Instagram on Saturday, October 31. The image has since been deleted, but it shows Stewart appearing disheveled, wearing tattered clothing and makeup meant to look like dirt on her face while holding a sign that said, “I AM HUNGRY HELP ME!!”

Stewart said in a statement to People on Sunday that her costume was meant to bring about “awareness to the very serious subject of homelessness” and not intended to be offensive.

“I’ve spent decades teaching others how to celebrate Halloween — sharing fun, festive recipes, providing unique craft ideas and giving tips on entertaining and hosting to make the most of one of my favorite holidays of the year,” the statement said.

“I am distressed that my Halloween costume yesterday, which was intended to bring more awareness to the very serious subject of homelessness, has offended people, which was never my intention,” she went on.

“Homelessness continues to remain one of America’s greatest challenges and ongoing crises, something that I care deeply about and I have spent a significant amount of time and effort supporting charities that combat this ongoing social epidemic,” Stewart concluded. “I am committed to continuing to make a difference.”

If that wasn’t enough groveling for one day, Stewart shared another apology on Sunday, this time to Instagram.

“It’s hard to admit when you’ve really screwed up. My earlier statement didn’t go far enough,” she posted. “I know many people are economically struggling. Wearing a costume like I did was insensitive and not funny. I’m very sorry.”

Many of her followers pushed back against the multiple apologies, saying everyone was being too sensitive about it.

“Girl! I dressed like a hobo 1981, I carried a Pepsi bottle in a brown paper bag to look like booze, and I had a bandanna on a stick with some clothes in it. There’s way bigger fish to fry in life. We love you,” one commenter said.

“I don’t get it. It’s a Halloween costume. Are we really going to rake someone over the coals over a costume? Obviously she’s not trying to offend anyone. I feel like society has lost its sense of humor,” another person agreed.

“You should’ve dressed as an inmate. That would’ve been funny af,” another follower joked, referencing the fact that Stewart is a convicted felon who spent five months in federal prison.

I am just an average American. My teen years were in the late 70s and I participated in all that that decade offered. Started working young, too young. Then I joined the Army before I graduated High School. I spent 25 years in, mostly in Infantry units. Since then I've worked in information technology positions all at small family owned companies. At this rate I'll never be a tech millionaire. When I was young I rode horses as much as I could. I do believe I should have been a cowboy. I'm getting in the saddle again by taking riding lessons and see where it goes.
