Michigan Republican Senate candidate Mike Rogers argued Sunday that his opponent Abdul El-Sayed can count out key Democrat voting blocs ahead of the midterm election, some of whom Rogers says are turning to his campaign.

“The Democrat coalitions that we have are the fastest-growing coalitions we have,” Rogers said on NBC’s “Meet the Press.”
He then named the voters he believes El-Sayed has lost. “Jewish Democrats say, ‘We can’t vote for him,’” Rogers said. “African Americans in Detroit and Pontiac and Flint say, ‘We can’t vote for him.’”
Rogers also cited a defection from the Democratic Party’s former leadership. “The chairman of the Democrat Party just came out and said he cannot — the former chairman, sorry, he cannot vote for Abdul,” he said.
Rogers was referring to Lon Johnson, a former chairman of the Michigan Democratic Party. Johnson co-wrote an op-ed in The Detroit News with longtime Democratic strategist David Kramer declaring, “We’re not going to vote for him.”
Meanwhile, El-Sayed is working to hold the voters Rogers says are slipping away. Former President Barack Obama campaigned with him in Detroit on Saturday, hoping to help the Democrat nominee pick up voters who loved Obama but are questioning El-Sayed.
Obama said El-Sayed’s opposition is using the same moves he faced years ago. “They will use lies, and they will use fear, and they will use division, and their name, or your faith, to somehow suggest that you are dangerous and less than trustworthy and less patriotic and less American than they are. We have seen this movie before. I starred in it.”
El-Sayed has also tried to go after some of Roger’s strongest voters: Christian men.
In a recent campaign video, El-Sayed described himself as a man of faith without revealing the religion he practices. “My name is Abdul. It means servant,” he said. “I pray every day. I reflect on that role, on this life, on this earth, how we leave it better than we found it. To serve God, to serve our neighbors. All across Michigan, families pray. They feel hopeless. Faith is a thing there is just too little of in Washington.”
He closed the video arguing more people of faith should be in power. “We need a few more people of faith in Washington. I’m Abdul El-Sayed, man of faith. That’s a good thing.”
El-Sayed has faced allegations from critics that he would use his faith to shape policy. “Can you imagine him being in the Senate, being able to recommend federal judges to presidents,” asked Detroit pastor Lorenzo Sewell. “That’s his goal. His goal is to be able to recommend federal judges to presidents for appointments, and then we’re going to find ourselves in Sharia law all over this land.”
The contest to become Michigan’s next senator is one of the country’s tightest races, with most polls showing El-Sayed holding a narrow lead over Rogers.
