Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent responded to a letter from Senator Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) with a brutal assessment of her economic literacy (or lack thereof), and he finished it off with a holiday twist.

In a letter dated October 9, Bessent responded to one he’d received two days earlier from the Massachusetts senator — in which she complained about the cost of the Iran war and that President Donald Trump’s signature One Big Beautiful Bill would add trillions to the national debt.

“I have received your October 7 letter, which adds to the mounting body of evidence of your complete paucity of knowledge about financial markets. Rather than take my suggestion of studying introductory economics, you have continued your letter-writing crusade and paid participation in tabloid fodder about the Treasury Department,” Bessent began.

Warren claimed in the letter that the One Big Beautiful Bill would add nearly $5 trillion to the deficit over the next decade — and that it would solely benefit “ultra-wealthy and large corporations — while cutting health care and food assistance for families. Meanwhile, the Iran war has cost taxpayers an estimated $43.6 billion to date, according to the Pentagon.”

Responding to Warren’s claims that Bessent was helping to drive up costs, Bessent added, “It is difficult to treat your concern as sincere. As the federal funds rate climbed from near zero to its highest level in 22 years, with inflation hitting a 40-year high, you were a cheerleader for the Biden Administration’s reckless spending.”

“While you voted for a $5 trillion tax hike on everyday Americans, the Working Families Tax Cuts continue to deliver for families and workers across the country,” he added, noting that when things got worse for everyday Americans, she’d blamed the Federal Reserve instead of “your own irresponsible fiscal policies.”

Bessent laid out some of the numbers from the 2025 tax season, saying that the average tax refund had been $3400 — an 11% increase over the previous year – and that millions had benefited from increased deductions and provisions such as “no tax on tips” and “no tax on overtime.”

He concluded the letter with an offer to provide Warren with a “Foreign Exchange for Dummies” tutorial, adding a jab about her history as a Harvard University professor while he taught at academic rival Yale: “If you receive a passing grade to the Yale metric, not the Harvard curve, I would be happy to also include a Fixed Income for Dummies.”

He finished off the letter with a handwritten note across the bottom, wishing a “Happy Indigenous People’s Day in advance to you and your family.” Warren’s longtime claims of Native American heritage blew up in her face when a DNA test revealed that she was just 1/64 to 1/1024 Native American — despite the fact that she’d previously claimed that heritage in order to receive minority considerations. She then had to apologize to several tribes who chastised her for taking the test at all, after they argued that DNA testing was not the true measure of Native American ancestry.

I am just an average American. My teen years were in the late 70s and I participated in all that that decade offered. Started working young, too young. Then I joined the Army before I graduated High School. I spent 25 years in, mostly in Infantry units. Since then I've worked in information technology positions all at small family owned companies. At this rate I'll never be a tech millionaire. When I was young I rode horses as much as I could. I do believe I should have been a cowboy. I'm getting in the saddle again by taking riding lessons and see where it goes.
