“Last year, our theme, ‘life is a gift,’ spoke to the heart,” March for Life’s Chief of Staff Hayden Sledge said in a virtual press conference on Tuesday. “This year, we are speaking to the head.”
She said the new theme invites people to examine pro-life arguments logically and come to the realization that they defend the truth.
“The soil is prime for us to make the case for the truth,” Sledge said, “the truth that every child in the womb is a unique and unrepeatable human life, the truth that no woman should ever be made … to choose between her future and human life, the truth about abortionists who are not in the business of real healthcare for women … the truth about buying and selling dangerous abortion drugs, many times illegally.”
Lauren Echevarria, director of communications at National Right to Life, echoed Sledge’s sentiments.
“The theme brings the debate back to the reality that abortion rhetoric too often obscures: An unborn child is a living human being,” Echevarria told The Daily signal. “No slogan can erase that child’s humanity, and no difficult circumstance makes the mother less deserving of compassion and support. Speaking the truth about abortion means recognizing both lives.”
Robyn Chambers, vice president of advocacy for children at Focus on the Family, said March for Life’s theme closely aligns with her organization’s own 2027 plans.
“I see this as an opportunity for the pro-life community to challenge the culture of death and demonstrate that being pro-life means supporting women, men, children, love, and families,” Chambers said. “Every day, we work to help women targeted by the abortion industry understand that they have alternatives that do not involve ending their child’s life. Women deserve clear, truthful information about all their options, including choosing life.”
America is becoming more pro-life, according to Sledge. She pointed to a 2025 Gallup poll that showed a 10% decrease from 2023 to 2025 in the share of young adults aged 18 to 24 who believe abortion should be legal “in all cases.”
March for Life began as an annual protest after the 1973 Supreme Court Case Roe v. Wade.Sledge said the walk still helps invigorate the movement even after the 2022 decision that overturned Roe, Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization.
“Every January, people of different ages, backgrounds, faiths, and life experiences come together in Washington around one shared truth: that every human life has worth,” Sledge said. “Then, they go home, invigorated and ready to spread that truth like wildfire in their unique spheres of influence—in the classroom, in the courts, on the legislative stage, and beyond.”
For March for Life, the “battle at hand” is the fight against abortion drugs, according to Sledge.
“One of our major priorities this year is showing the dangers in access to these abortion drugs.” She continued. “They are the most prevalent way abortions are being carried out right now. They are also the most physically, mentally, psychologically damaging for the women that take them.”
A report by the Ethics and Public Policy Center shows that almost 11% of women who take mifepristone, one of these pills used for chemical abortions, experience “sepsis, infection, hemorrhaging, or another serious or life-threatening adverse event.”
As part of its theme reveal, March for Life also shared that former Major League Baseball player, Clayton Kershaw, will be the keynote speaker at the 2027 march in January. Aside from baseball, Kershaw and his wife founded Kershaw’s Challenge, a faith-based organization that raises money for at-risk children.
Sledge sees Kershaw’s decision to speak up for life as a sign that people from diverse backgrounds and professions are becoming more committed to protecting unborn life.
“His saying yes to the March for Life is speaking to the crux of our theme, ‘the truth is pro-life’ is permeating all aspects of our society, even pop culture,” Sledge told The Daily Signal. “It’s really exciting for someone from the sports arena to come and be a voice alongside the pro-lifers.”
The upcoming March for Life will happen on Friday, Jan. 22, 2027. The Washington, D.C., event will begin with a pre-rally and concert at the National Mall, followed by the march itself.
