The George Floyd riots in 2020 brought a dark undercurrent of violence on the Left to the forefront of American politics. The violence had its epicenters in progressive cities, but it was very much national—thousands of arrests occurred at hundreds of violent demonstrations in what became the largest civil-unrest-related insurance event in American history.
Many of America’s political leaders cowered in the face of this mass hysteria and made commitments to defund the police or ‘reimagine’ law enforcement. The agents of chaos received a powerful message: Violence will get you what you want.
Fast forward to 2024: President Trump is nearly assassinated twice. Today, the nation is still reeling from the public assassination of Charlie Kirk.
Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall has some firsthand experience with the violent Left. In February 2024, a radical Antifa leftist bombed his office. Whether it’s leftist violence, policing, or immigration, Marshall’s tenure as Alabama attorney general, which stretches back to 2017, had touchpoints with almost every major political issue facing America in the last ten years. Now, he’s running for one of Alabama’s seats in the U.S. Senate. And he is this week’s guest on “The Signal Sitdown”
In the early morning hours of Feb. 24, 2024, a bomb stuffed with nails and firecrackers concealed inside of a package was detonated outside of Marshall’s office in Montgomery. No one was injured in the attack.
Surveillance footage recovered from the FBI showed the perpetrator, 26-year-old Kyle Calvert, putting up stickers around the area with slogans such as “eat the rich” and “abolish ICE.”
“It’s strange when you show up at your office and learn that an Antifa supporting individual who hates Christian public servants—so I’m like exhibit A for him—sets off an explosive device at our office and had put Antifa stickers around on buildings and on parking garages,” Marshall told The Daily Signal.
The incident, Marshall said, “shows how far the left’s willing to go.”
“I mean, look, we’ve just survived kind of as a nation the trauma of Charlie Kirk’s assassination,” Marshall said. “And we’ve seen how far the left is not only willing to go with violent words, but now violent actions and to some extent condone that.”
The February 2024 bombing and the violence that has followed should be a “wake up call of what we’re facing in the conservative movement,” said Marshall. “It is not only folks that claim they’re willing to debate us in the marketplace of ideas, but willing to eliminate those who are aggressively pushing back against their agenda.”
“It was also a motivator in a strange way,” Marshall said of the attack. “We have to engage and I cannot allow somebody’s violence, violent action against us, and some of the rhetoric that we see out there that plays out in social media, to deter me from doing the things I need to do.”
“It has created a sense of urgency, that one that we need to continue to embrace,” the attorney general added.
That urgency is felt acutely by public servants tasked to make communities safe.
“It’s not rocket science,” Marshall told The Daily Signal. “You surge law enforcement into areas where bad guys are doing bad things and you’re able to stop the flow of bad acts,” Marshall said of Alabama’s approach to maintaining law and order.
“We saw the [crime] numbers drop, and that matters, but what gets lost in the numbers is those are real people. Those are real lives,” Marshall added.
“Where I saw the tangible difference is when I get the phone call from the woman in Montgomery who’d lived there almost her whole life, who talked about the community in which she lived as a place that there was violent crime going on, and the fact that now she felt safe to just sit out on her front porch,” Marshall explained. “I mean, that’s making a difference and that’s showing that, collectively, not only good policy can work but, when you have people that are willing to lead, you’re able to be able to make a difference.”
The rising tide of violence in America is in part a result of bad policies that stem from the George Floyd riots.
“What we saw was the spike of violent crime across our country,” Marshall said.
“A consequence of the post George Floyd era was a demonizing of the profession of law enforcement and a reduction of the number of people that were raising their hands saying they want to protect and serve,” Marshall continued. “One of the saddest things for me is when I’ll talk to law enforcement officers who’ve been in service for 25, 30 years, and they’re not willing to look at their own child and say, ‘man, it’d be great for you to follow in my footsteps.’”
“It’s a sad commentary,” Marshall said. “Law enforcement is really the only thing between order and chaos, and we need to embrace their role in their function in our communities.”
