Elon Musk is returning to an advisory role in the Trump administration, this time to help lead a Pentagon study on the future of warfare, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth announced Wednesday.

The initiative, dubbed “Project Meridian,” will draw on expertise outside the military.

“We are leveraging a unique source of American advantage, one our adversaries do not have: our innovators, our senior leaders and our technologists — big thinkers and doers who will forecast the creative solution for tomorrow’s conflicts,” Hegseth said.

Anduril Industries founder Palmer Luckey and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich will lead the study alongside Musk.

“Their work will be focused on discovering, developing and fielding the weapons and systems that our children and our grandchildren will need in their lifetimes,” Hegseth said.

Musk has previously argued that drones and missiles will dominate future conflicts. In 2024, he said the future of war would be “all about drones and hypersonic missiles,” adding, “Fighter jets piloted by humans will be destroyed very quickly.”

Musk previously spearheaded the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) initiative before leaving the White House and publicly falling out with President Donald Trump.

The two sat next to each other at a memorial service for Turning Point USA CEO Charlie Kirk.

“I’ve always liked Elon,” Trump said. “He had a bad spell, he had a bad period, he had a bad moment. … But I like Elon, and I suspect I’ll always like him.”

Musk and other top tech executives went to the White House Tuesday to discuss artificial intelligence. Later that day, Trump signed an executive order directing federal agencies to use “Super Intelligence” and “SI” in place of “Artificial Intelligence” and “AI,” arguing that the new terminology better reflects the technology’s capabilities.

At an event launching America.gov., a government website featuring an AI-assisted chatbot, Trump publicly thanked Musk for his earlier work.

“I also have to thank the man who initially envisioned the transformation of government through technology and brought us the talent to get the job done, and that’s Elon Musk,” Trump said.

I am just an average American. My teen years were in the late 70s and I participated in all that that decade offered. Started working young, too young. Then I joined the Army before I graduated High School. I spent 25 years in, mostly in Infantry units. Since then I've worked in information technology positions all at small family owned companies. At this rate I'll never be a tech millionaire. When I was young I rode horses as much as I could. I do believe I should have been a cowboy. I'm getting in the saddle again by taking riding lessons and see where it goes.
