Trump drew widespread attention ahead of the April event, which was set to be his first White House Correspondents’ Dinner as a sitting president, where he was expected to deliver fiery remarks and hurl insults at reporters.
Before he even reached the podium, gunshots rang out at a security checkpoint one floor above the ballroom, forcing the U.S. Secret Service to evacuate Trump, Vice President JD Vance, and members of the Cabinet from the ballroom. Confused journalists and other VIPs took cover under tables.

The president, who initially wanted the event to proceed, has for weeks suggested the possibility of rescheduling it. He confirmed the news on Truth Social.
“In a sign of Strength and Fortitude, it was just announced that The White House Correspondents’ Dinner, which violently ended rather abruptly on April 25th, will be rescheduled to July 24th. This announcement is a very good thing in that we cannot allow Lunatics to change our way of life, or even its scheduling,” Trump said.
“I don’t know whether or not I will give the same rather nasty statements, at least as it concerns certain people, but we will soon find out. In any event, it will be a ‘HOT’ ticket!” he added.
The dinner is scheduled to be held at the Waldorf Astoria on Pennsylvania Avenue, in what Trump noted is “a building and ballroom that I built.”
White House Correspondents’ Association president Weijia Jiang celebrated the rescheduling.
“Our first dinner is part of history, as will be the WHCA’s response. We will not allow an act of violence to have the last word, especially during a year when we are reflecting on America 250 and everything we stand for,” she said on X.
I’m proud to share the WHCD will be held on 07/24. Our first dinner is part of history, as will be the WHCA’s response. We will not allow an act of violence to have the last word, especially during a year when we are reflecting on America 250 and everything we stand for.

Authorities say Cole Tomas Allen, 31, was armed with a shotgun, handgun, and knives when he charged through a security checkpoint inside the Washington Hilton, where the WHCD was being held.
One floor above the ballroom, packed with government officials and reporters, Allen discharged one of his weapons, which allegedly struck a Secret Service agent before Allen fell to the ground.
In May, a federal magistrate judge apologized to the suspect and grilled jail officials over his conditions behind bars.
“I’m sorry,” Judge Zia Faruqui told Allen, who was reportedly held in solitary confinement. “Whatever you’ve been through, I apologize for the prior week,” The Daily Wire previously reported.
A grand jury returned a four-count indictment charging Allen with attempting to assassinate the president, assaulting an officer with a deadly weapon, transporting a firearm and ammunition across state lines with intent to commit a felony, and discharging a firearm during a crime of violence.
If convicted, he faces life in prison.
