‘The View’ Co-Host Sunny Hostin Has Trouble Telling The Truth (Again); Will ABC Respond?

So, Sunny Hostin cannibalized the truth — no surprise to anybody who has watched the misinformation campaign that passes for discourse on the ABC coffee klatch, “The View.” The shock is that this time Hostin, one of the show’s co-hosts, didn’t misremember anything said or done by President Donald Trump, a favorite target.

The person whose actions Hostin lied about this week were her own. Kudos to the New York Post for exposing the truth about the claims she made on Tuesday’s show that she was the lone holdout juror in an infamous 1991 New York City trial of a man, Daniel Rakowitz, accused of murdering his girlfriend, then dismembering and eating parts of her body — and boiling the rest in a soup that he served to the homeless at a local park, hence his acquired moniker “Butcher of Tompkins Square Park.”

Hostin’s tumble into truthiness — the term coined by the late night host Stephen Colbert to describe facts rooted in “knowing with your heart” — calls to mind the hot water that boiled NBC News anchor Brian Williams in 2015, when it came out that he had been lying for years about riding in a helicopter that was shot down by enemy fire while on a 2003 reporting tour in Iraq.

Williams was in one of four U.S. Army aircraft forced to land that day to avoid enemy fire. That much was true. But another helicopter was the one actually hit. Williams, who later apologized and said he had no idea what caused him to conflate one helicopter with another, was suspended without pay for six months. He lost his anchor seat permanently when his NBC bosses decided to stick with his replacement, Lester Holt.

In levying the suspension, NBC officials explained that Williams had jeopardized the trust that its viewers placed in the newscast and that he had a responsibility to be truthful and to embody the news division’s high standards.

At the time, psychologists ascribed Williams’ lie to a phenomenon known as a “false memory,” which is a recollection of an event or detail that a person genuinely believes to be true but is actually a distortion of reality or a fabrication out of whole cloth. The phenomenon could also explain other misremembering like Hillary Rodham Clinton once claiming to have been under sniper fire in Bosnia and Mitt Romney remembering an event that occurred before he was born.

It speaks to the malleability of memory that our past can be reshaped in our own minds by the stories we tell ourselves. Similarly to Williams, Hostin was not making up the part about being on the jury. But what caused her to conflate one jury member with another? According to the New York Post, it was widely reported at the time — and confirmed by a law enforcement source this week — that the holdout juror was a man.

Will Hostin face the same discipline from her bosses that Williams accepted from his? And if she does, will she say it’s because of her sex or race as she does when alleging discriminatory behavior she has been made to endure? A recent case in point was when she asserted that she was a victim of Hollywood gatekeeping “around Black and Brown creative content” because the tawdry book trilogy she had written had not been made into a series or films.

This is the second time in a matter of months that Hostin, 57, has made headlines for behavior unbecoming of a network television talking head. Over the summer, she unsuccessfully attempted to prevent her 24-year-old son from receiving a trespassing citation.

Police bodycam footage showed officers approaching her son, Gabriel, on active Metro-North property in Westchester County, N.Y., and placing him in handcuffs while he spoke to his mother on the phone.

Hostin arrived on the scene by car and informed officers that she was one of the co-hosts of “The View” and also a former federal prosecutor and that her son, a Harvard graduate, is not someone who gets into trouble. She asked them not to issue a citation.

Never mind those police officers; how can ABC viewers believe a word Hostin says from here on out? Has she given her bosses cause to pull the plug on a show that has been on life support for a while? Stay tuned.
