Antifa-Affiliated Groups Designated Terrorist Orgs by Trump Administration
The Trump administration is cracking down on left-wing violence, designating four Europe-based, Antifa-affiliated organizations as terrorist groups on Wednesday.
The State Department designated a Germany-based organization, an Italy-based group, and two Greek organizations as “Specially Designated Global Terrorists” and also stated that all four groups will be viewed as “Foreign Terrorist Organizations (FTOs)” as of Nov. 20.
“The United States will continue using all available tools to protect our nation from these anti-American, anti-capitalist, and anti-Christian terrorist groups,” the Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a statement.
The Groups
One of the four groups that is being designated is Antifa Ost, which is based in Germany and has been accused of perpetuating attacks in Budapest. In September, the Hungarian government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Viktor Orban, declared the group a terrorist organization.
Informal Anarchist Federation, also known as the International Revolutionary Front, works primarily in Italy and has taken responsibility “for threats of violence, bombs, and letter bombs against political and economic institutions, including a courthouse and other ‘capitalist institutions,’” since 2003, according to the State Department.
The Armed Proletarian Justice and the Revolutionary Class Self-Defense were the two Greek organizations given the terrorist designation. Armed Proletarian Justice has accepted responsibility for planting a bomb near police headquarters in Goudi, Greece in 2023, per the Trump administration. For it’s part, the Revolutionary Class Self-Defense took credit for IED attacks in 2024 and 2025.
Intensifying Left-Wing Violence
The move comes as the United States is once again facing a wave of left-wing violence in its major cities. Antifa has squared off against law enforcement and immigration enforcement throughout the country as the Trump administration’s mass deportation efforts continue.
College campuses have also been hotbeds of left-wing violence, from the recent assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk to the protests that erupted this week at the University of California, Berkeley over a campus tour that Kirk would likely have keynoted if not for his murder.
The Trump administration had previously designated Antifa as a domestic terrorist organization shortly after Kirk’s murder.
The new foreign terrorist designations could have tangible effects on the capabilities of the four organizations to operate in the U.S. and abroad.
“All property and property interests of designated individuals or groups that are in the United States or that are in possession or control of a U.S. person are blocked. U.S. persons are generally prohibited from conducting business with sanctioned persons. It is also a crime to knowingly provide material support or resources to those designated, or to attempt or conspire to do so,” the State Department noted in a statement.
Previously, Rubio had been urged by members of Congress, including by Sen. Eric Schmitt, R-Mo., who wrote a letter to his former Senate colleague urging him to pursue legal action against the organizations supporting unlawful violence.
