Critics Rip Newsom’s Blue-Collar Talk: ‘Communists Lie Like They Breathe’

California Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom is getting mocked online for suggesting that his family was “hustling” to survive while he was growing up.

“My mom was 19, pregnant, and divorced a few years later, with two kids,” he said during an appearance on the podcast “All the Smoke,” which aired over the weekend. “Came from no money and just hustled. You know, worked hard, grinding every single day. Two and a half jobs, no bullsh**.”

“We had roommates all the time because she couldn’t afford the rent,” Newsom added. “…It was also about paying the bills, man. It was just like hustling and so I was out there, kind of raising myself, turning on the TV, just getting obsessed. I was sitting there with the Wonder Bread…the macaroni and cheese.”

This isn’t the first time the California governor has mentioned having struggles growing up, but critics point out that Newsom’s late father, William Newsom, was an attorney with ties to billionaire heir Gordon Getty.

“His dad worked for Getty oil,” comedian Adam Carolla posted on X in response to the podcast interview clip.

“Between the extremely wealthy and privileged Gavin Newsom doing this act and Zohran Mamdani faking tears over his family being the real victims of 9-11, you can see how bright the future of the Democratic Party is,” Outkick writer Ian Miller said.

“Communists lie like they breathe,” podcast host Jesse Kelly agreed. “That’s why the long history of fake accents and fake backstories is so prevalent on the Left. They have nothing moral against telling the lie. The recipient has nothing moral against being told the lie. Everyone just marches on as if it’s normal.”

There are conflicting messages about whether Newsom’s family was wealthy during his childhood. Other critics circulated photos of Newsom wearing a plaid scarf and being voted “Most Stylish” in high school. There is also an image of Newsom posing alongside Paul Mohen, Andrew Getty, and Billy Getty, which ran in the San Francisco Chronicle in 1991 for the piece “Children of the Rich.”

But a rep for the California governor denied these assertions.

“Anyone with more than an inch of curiosity would know that Governor Newsom was raised by his mother after her divorce from his father when he was 3 years old,” a spokesperson for Newsom said in a statement.

“He has talked about moving between two different worlds, but he was raised by a mother who worked three jobs at one point — secretary, waitress, and paralegal.”

Fibis I am just an average American. My teen years were in the late 70s and I participated in all that that decade offered. Started working young, too young. Then I joined the Army before I graduated High School. I spent 25 years in, mostly in Infantry units. Since then I've worked in information technology positions all at small family owned companies. At this rate I'll never be a tech millionaire. When I was young I rode horses as much as I could. I do believe I should have been a cowboy. I'm getting in the saddle again by taking riding lessons and see where it goes.
