Leavitt Responds to Thune’s Hesitancy to Prioritize SAVE America Act

White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt reacted to Senate Majority Leader John Thune saying the math doesn’t add up to pass President Donald Trump’s SAVE America Act.

“I think the urgency behind his need to pass the SAVE America Act and his desire to get this country- saving legislation passed have been made quite clear,” Leavitt said of the president on Tuesday.

Thune, R-S.D., had said, “The votes aren’t there to nuke the filibuster, and the votes aren’t there for a talking filibuster.” These are the only options for the Senate to pass the bill without the customary 60 votes to end debate.

Trump “wants all options on the table, and he wants the Senate to move as quickly as possible through whatever means necessary,” Leavitt said.

Trump said Monday that the SAVE America Act should be the GOP’s “No. 1 priority” ahead of the midterms.

“It will guarantee the midterms,” Trump said. “If you don’t get it, big trouble, my opinion.”

On Truth Social, Trump said he would “not sign other Bills until this is passed.”

Leavitt said the SAVE America Act is “one of the most critical pieces of legislation in our nation’s history.”

“The SAVE America Act is overwhelmingly popular with all Americans because each provision is rooted in common sense,” she said.

If passed and signed into law, the SAVE America Act, which stands for the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, would require proof of United States citizenship to register to vote and a valid photo ID to vote.

The legislation has passed the House but faces an uncertain future in the Senate.

Trump demanded additions to the bill that passed the House, including provisions ending mail-in voting, banning men from women’s sports, and prohibiting irreversible transgender procedures for minors.

More than 70% of Americans support the SAVE America Act, including 69% of independents and half of Democrats, according to a new Harvard/HarrisX poll.
