Mamdani Releases Video Demonizing Landlords. But He Is NYC’s Biggest Slumlord of All.

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani released a slick video this week portraying landlords as villains and housing advocates along with their government allies as heroes.

But the truth is that Mamdani and the government are by far the biggest slumlords in the city and increasing public ownership as he clearly intends will only further spread misery.

More on that in a bit.

First, the video.

Mamdani’s taxpayer-funded film is called, “The Union of Pinnacle Tenants: A Short History of NYC Housing.” It features Mamdani, leftist actor Morgan Spector, who narrates, and New York’s pro-communist, anti-white middle class tenant czar Cea Weaver.

“This is Cea, Cea Weaver … she’s here to tell us a story about one of the worst landlords in New York City,” the video begins.

Washington Free Beacon reported that the video particularly demonizes Pinnacle Group, owned by Joel Weiner, “while praising tenant organizers.”

“Many of the tenants that I’ve gotten to know in my over a decade of tenant organizing in New York City have described Pinnacle really as a slum,” said Josie Wells, a tenant organizer interviewed for the film.

But as City Journal noted in January, the characterization of Pinnacle as a malicious landlord until the government stepped in is highly misleading. In fact, many of its alleged failures were directly tied to government policies. And its record has hardly been as bad as it has been portrayed.

City Journal cited a legal brief that said, “Pinnacle’s properties had fewer violations than the citywide average; that none of its buildings came close to meeting the city’s threshold for “unsatisfactory” housing (three or more violations per unit); and that, had one tenant not vandalized an elevator and barred Pinnacle from entering her apartment to make repairs, the number of violations would have been even lower.”

Mamdani says near the end of the film, “When it comes to housing, the binary we face is not between structures and people. It is between a government that debates and a government that delivers.”

That’s pure blather, socialist claptrap made to sound clever but completely divorced from reality.

The government frequently “delivers” a steaming pile of garbage to the people of New York, also broken appliances, mold, cockroaches, and rats.

What’s not mentioned in Mamdani’s 13-minute video is how the city’s worst, most notorious landlord is the city government itself.

The New York City Housing Authority, which operates public housing in the city, has an extensive track record of mismanagement, neglect of properties and tenants, and has been rife with almost comical amounts of fraud and corruption.

In 2024, 70 NYCHA employees were charged with various bribery, fraud, and extortion crimes which led to the “largest number of federal bribery charges on a single day in Department of Justice history.”

That didn’t stem the agency’s ongoing problems, which the New York Post called “deep and tangled beyond all measure.”

In January, public advocate Jumaane Williams released his annual list of worst landlords in the city. He said in an interview with PIX11 News that the city’s record is far worse than any private landlord, that it had 612,000 open work orders as of last November, which was more than the two worst private landlords combined.

“They would far surpass anyone on the list, but they’re public,” Williams—who, ironically, has described himself as a democratic socialist—said of the NYCHA. “Perpetual mismanagement of NYCHA has made the city itself the worst overall landlord for hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers.”

One long-term New York resident wrote in March for the New York Daily News that NYCHA properties were often wretchedly filthy and that while Mamdani “targets private landlords while ignoring the shortcomings of city government. The city doesn’t maintain these NYCHA buildings as they expect private owners to do. The agency doesn’t show pride or care.”

A May report in the Bronx Times explained that the NYCHA is the country’s largest housing authority, but it is “highly distrusted” as residents in the Bronx have had to deal with a building collapse, “an apartment flooded with raw sewage-contaminated water, daily outages of heat, gas and elevators, and other problems, large and small, that worsen their health, safety and quality of life.”

Only in the summer do you experience the “warmth of collectivism” when your A/C unit breaks down and your NYCHA landlord decides to get around to fixing it sometime between now and never.

Keep in mind, this is the agency that will assumedly handle all the new public properties once the rent freezes and other various regulations seemingly designed by the Mamdani administration to kill the private housing market do their work.

If Mamdani was serious about cracking down on bad landlords, he’d look in the mirror and focus on fixing some of the myriad problems of the agency the government directly controls.

But that’s not how socialism works. 

Their “solutions” to problems always amount to giving them more power, and once you do, your problems will never go away.
