Massive Explosion Outside Louisville Airport After UPS Plane Crash
A UPS plane crashed near the Muhammad Ali Louisville International Airport in Kentucky on Tuesday evening, with multiple injuries reported.
The plane that went down was a McDonnell Douglas MD-11, CBS Louisville affiliate WLKY reported. Those aircraft are primarily flown by companies like UPS and FedEx to transport cargo. UPS issued a statement confirming that the crash occurred at approximately 5:20 p.m., adding that three crew members were onboard.
“At this time, we have not confirmed any injuries/casualties,” the company added. “UPS will release more facts as they become available, but the National Transportation Safety Board is in charge of the investigation and will be the primary source of information about the official investigation.”
Videos posted on social media showed a massive explosion after the crash, with plumes of smoke rising into the air. Officials issued a shelter-in-place order for people within a five-mile radius of the airport.

It looks like there may have been an engine fire but the plane was likely past the point of no return and could not abort the take off in time.@KHOU pic.twitter.com/7yz1Wf3X7E
