The Shocking Number Of Drugs Lindsay Clancy Was Prescribed

In the span of four months, Lindsay Clancy, the woman who took her three children to the basement of their home and strangled them to death one by one, was prescribed 13 different medications. 

“I really don’t like the way I feel on the Remeron and I know that I can’t stick with taking it,” Clancy told psychiatric nurse practitioner Rebecca Jollotta through her patient portal in December 2022. “I started having very intrusive thoughts that I never had before.”

Remeron’s generic drug name is mirtazapine, an antidepressant. It was one of the 13 medications Clancy was prescribed before she killed her 5-year-old daughter, 3-year-old son, and 8-month-old son on January 24, 2023.

In another message to Jollotta, she wrote, “I also just feel concerningly numb right now, like I have no emotion whatsoever. I feel like I’m going to die, and I don’t care. What do I do about this?”

Jollotta testified in court that she told Clancy her symptoms would “get better.”

“I said, ‘Even though they feel terrible, remember that there are symptoms of an illness that is very real and very treatable. This is going to get better.”

Weeks later, Clancy would murder her children and attempt to commit suicide by throwing herself out of her home’s second-story window.

Jollotta is one of the medical professionals who was sued by both Clancy and Clancy’s now ex-husband for allegedly overmedicating Clancy. Jollotta denies the allegations.

Clancy has admitted to killing her children, but her defense team is arguing she should not be held criminally responsible because she was suffering from postpartum psychosis, a mental illness that includes hallucinations and delusions.

A note that was last edited on Clancy’s cellphone the day before she strangled her children read, “I was the healthiest, happiest mom. I worked out every morning, meditated, and took care of myself so I could be the best for my kids. Until prescription medication stole me from my own body. It began with a touch of postpartum anxiety.”

Prosecuting attorney Shanan Buckingham argued that Clancy “acted intentionally, rationally, and swiftly” to kill her children. Clancy waited until her husband was out of the home before committing the act. Buckingham added, “This is not a public debate about women’s mental health and how the medical system treats women. This case is about this defendant, Lindsay Clancy.”

Before the murders, Clancy made several searches on the internet.
