Trump Says No SNAP: This Is All On Democrats, And We Won’t Budge

President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that the delay in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits — commonly referred to as food stamps — will continue for tens of millions of Americans until Senate Democrats reopen the government.

“SNAP BENEFITS, which increased by Billions and Billions of Dollars (MANY FOLD!) during Crooked Joe Biden’s disastrous term in office (Due to the fact that they were haphazardly ‘handed’ to anyone for the asking, as opposed to just those in need, which is the purpose of SNAP!), will be given only when the Radical Left Democrats open up government, which they can easily do, and not before!” the president posted to Truth Social.

Trump’s message comes one day after the administration said it would dip into emergency funds to partially fund SNAP with a $4.65 billion payment, following a federal judge’s order. A court filing said that the process could take “a few weeks to up to several months.”

The government has been shut down since October 1, and Democrats have refused to vote for a continuing resolution 13 times. Democrats want certain healthcare subsidies, while Republicans argue that they are trying to fund healthcare for illegal immigrants on the taxpayers’ dime.

Due to the shutdown, there are no funds for food stamps, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said last week.

“Senate Democrats have now voted 13 times to not fund the food stamp program, also known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP),” the USDA homepage reads. “Bottom line, the well has run dry.”

“We are approaching an inflection point for Senate Democrats,” it says. “They can continue to hold out for healthcare for illegal aliens and gender mutilation procedures or reopen the government so mothers, babies, and the most vulnerable among us can receive critical nutrition assistance.”

USDA Secretary Brooke Rollins said on Sunday that the SNAP program is rife with fraud and abuse, and Democrats are refusing to cooperate to fix it.

“On my first day [USDA], we told every state to send us their SNAP data so we could make sure illegal immigrants aren’t getting benefits meant for American families,” Rollins said in a post on X. “[Twenty-nine] states stepped up, 21 blue states refused — and two SUED US FOR ASKING!”

“And guess what? In just the states that cooperated, we’ve already uncovered massive fraud,” she continued. “The Democrat Party has turned its back on working Americans and built its entire strategy around protecting illegal aliens. They know if the handouts stop, those illegals will go back home, and Democrats will lose 20+ seats after the next census.”

“There’s a new sheriff in town. [President Donald Trump] will not tolerate waste, fraud, or abuse while hardworking Americans go hungry,” Rollins added.

Currently, 42 million Americans receive SNAP benefits — a significant increase since COVID pandemic policies were implemented. Federal spending for the program totaled nearly $100 billion in 2024 alone, with the average recipient receiving about $187.20 per month.
