The resignation, which takes effect immediately, follows the bipartisan ethics panel finding that Cherfilus-McCormick committed 25 ethics violations, including breaking campaign finance laws. In November 2025, the Department of Justice indicted the congresswoman for allegedly stealing $5 million in federal disaster relief funds to finance her campaign.

“This was not a fair process,” Cherfilus-McCormick said in a statement. “The Ethics committee refused my new attorney’s reasonable request for time to prepare my defense. By going forward with this process while a criminal indictment is pending, the Committee prevented me from defending myself.”

“I will not stand by and pretend this has been anything other than a witch hunt,” she added.

Cherfilus-McCormick is the third House member to resign since April 13. Former representatives Eric Swalwell (D-CA) and Tony Gonzales (R-TX) resigned following sex and misconduct scandals.

Fibis I am just an average American. My teen years were in the late 70s and I participated in all that that decade offered. Started working young, too young. Then I joined the Army before I graduated High School. I spent 25 years in, mostly in Infantry units. Since then I've worked in information technology positions all at small family owned companies. At this rate I'll never be a tech millionaire. When I was young I rode horses as much as I could. I do believe I should have been a cowboy. I'm getting in the saddle again by taking riding lessons and see where it goes.
