Recall Petition Filed Against McKinney Mayor, 3 Council Members 

McKinney residents who organized a recall of the mayor and three council members have filed their petition, saying they gathered over 7,500 signatures.

On Friday, recall organizers submitted the signatures to the city secretary, a day before the deadline, to ensure that City Hall would be open to accept them.

The petition organizers only needed 5,805 signatures but exceeded that number before the deadline. John Aselton, an organizer for the recall, also said organizers had internally verified at least 6,500 signatures from registered McKinney voters, according to The Dallas Express.

Paul Chabot, chairman of Collin County Citizens for Integrity PAC, said he expects the city to follow through with the recall.

“McKinney residents are looking for new leadership. Despite multiple threats to dox recall signers, we saw overwhelming support from citizens across the political spectrum,” Chabot said. “We expect the city to follow the law throughout the recall process.”

“In the coming weeks, we anticipate a recall election date to be announced for any council member who does not resign after being formally notified by the city secretary,” he added.

Ashley Marie, a petition volunteer, also shared that residents cleared the required threshold.

“McKinney residents did what the charter allows them to do. They collected the signatures, they turned them in, and they cleared the threshold organizers were required to meet,” Marie said. “That is not extremism. That is self-government.”

The recall, launched in August, targets McKinney Mayor Bill Cox and Council Members Justin Beller, Geré Feltus, and Ernest Lynch. The stated purpose of the recall was based on “a loss of public confidence in the ability of the officers named herein to faithfully represent the citizens of the City of McKinney.”

The organizers noted that submitting the signatures does not mean that the city has certified them. Under the McKinney City Charter, the city secretary has 30 days from the date the petition was received to review and validate the signatures.

If the petition qualifies and an official does not resign within the period specified in the charter, the McKinney City Council must order a recall election, according to state law.

Cox, Beller, Feltus, and Lynch did not respond to a request for comment by the time of publication.
