‘That’s Gonna Be Your Issue’: Trump Gives House GOP Midterm Playbook

President Donald Trump told a gathering of House Republicans that healthcare should be their top issue as they begin campaigning for the 2026 midterm elections.

“It’s never been our issue,” Trump said in a speech at the GOP Issues Conference Tuesday in Washington, D.C. “It should be our issue.”

“Let’s figure it out. Let the money go directly to the people. It goes in a healthcare account,” he said. “There are numerous things you can do, but you have to let no money for the insurance companies.”

Trump spoke several days after Obamacare subsidies, expanded under the Biden administration and Democrat-controlled Congress, expired at the end of 2025.

Without the subsidies, around 22 million Americans are expected to see higher premium costs this year.

However, conservative leaders implored Congress to hold fast against extending the subsidies, arguing they benefitted some affluent households and funded health plans covering abortions and sex changes. Some Republicans have also said the policy effectively functions as a subsidy to insurance companies.

Almost 6 in 10 Americans reported being “extremely” or “very” concerned about rising healthcare costs in the 2026 calendar year, according to an AP/NORC poll.

One Republican proposal would replace the expired subsidies with health savings accounts, arguing it would give money to patients rather than insurance companies.

“These things are so important because you guys gotta get elected,” Trump said on Tuesday.

He warned that Republicans will suffer at the polls in the November midterm elections if they do not take action on the issue.

“Because if you don’t get elected, we have a country that’s going to go to hell. So we can’t play games,” he said.

“Ladies and gentlemen, the sun will rise tomorrow, and when it rises, we won’t need this bullsh*t. We need to talk about favored nations. And your numbers are coming down at levels that nobody’s ever seen.”

Trump’s “Most-Favored-Nation” executive order required drug companies to lower their prices in America to match the lowest price abroad.

Trump said he fears he’ll be impeached if Republicans fail in the midterm elections.

“You got to win the midterms, because if we don’t win the midterms, it’s just gonna be, I mean, they’ll find a reason to impeach me,” he said. “I’ll get impeached.”

Trump said energy is another issue Republicans should focus on.

“Your energy prices have come so far down,” Trump said.
