Rob Reiner Made A Movie About His Son’s Struggle With Addiction 10 Years Before His Murder
Hollywood director Rob Reiner, who was murdered on Sunday, made a film covering his son Nick’s struggles with addiction and other issues a decade before he was accused of murdering his parents.
Nick Reiner, 32, was arrested Monday in connection with his parents’ deaths and is currently being held at the Parker Center Jail in downtown Los Angeles, as The Daily Wire previously reported. His bail is set at $4 million.
The 2016 drama “Being Charlie” is loosely based on the Reiner family drama. It was co-written by Nick and a friend he met in rehab, with his father serving as director. Cary Elwes played the character meant to represent Rob, while Nick Robinson portrayed the son in the film.
“Being Charlie” follows Charlie Mills, an 18-year-old addict whose father, David, is running for governor. Charlie is unhappy that his father and mother take a tough love approach to his substance abuse by forcing him to go to rehab.
The film premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival.
“When Nick would tell us that it wasn’t working for him, we wouldn’t listen. We were desperate and because the people had diplomas on their wall, we listened to them when we should have been listening to our son,” Rob Reiner told the Los Angeles Times while promoting the film in 2016.
“We were so influenced by these people. They would tell us he’s a liar, that he was trying to manipulate us. And we believed them,” Rob’s wife, Michele, who was also murdered on Sunday, said at the time.

Nick was sober at the time of the interview and also contributed to the conversation. “I got sick of it. I got sick of doing that sh*t. I come from a nice family. I’m not supposed to be out there on the streets and in homeless shelters doing all these f*cked-up things.”
After a screening of the film at the Toronto International Film Festival, Rob said it was “cathartic” and “therapeutic” for the family, despite that not being the intention when making it. Nick said it was “overwhelming” to make it, per The Hollywood Reporter.
